I fly to AK on Tues with Br Bear as my primary target and moose secondary. I am pretty well packed with lots of layering and waterproof clothing and the normal gear. Anyone have any last minute gear recommendations that might come in handy that wouldn't normally be thought of?

Stop by Barney's Sports Chalet on your way through Anchorage. I'll be working there Tuesday evening from 3-7. We'll run through the store and see what you need if anything. If we don't have it you probably don't need it.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Tim,

We did a self guided-fly in hunt but obviously you will be guided so I expect the basics will all be covered.

When I went a few years back it rained all day every day and stuff never dried. Seriously - never dried – my gear may still be wet! I had two pairs of gloves and wished I had 4 - or more. Also socks - take more than you need because wet feet and hands are miserable.

One guy I talked to recommended Fleece pants to wear under my waders and they were awesome! I got the ones that were wind proof and did not regret the extra expense. Now they are my favorite around any hunting camp or ski trip etc. Get some and you will not regret it!

Final item - folding stadium/ground chair. You know the one with the foam back and bottom with the nylon strap between them? You can get one at Wally-World for like $15. Seriously - an Alaskan hunt veteran recommended it to me and it was the best idea ever. I was the envy around camp. They weigh next to nothing and mold well in your pack. I strapped it on my backpack every day and when used it when I sat on the hills glassing. It supported my back – allowing for longer periods of glassing – and kept my butt dry. And since we were in a tent camp it was very nice around camp as well.

Good luck and post pictures!

Make the first one count!

Last year I took my PDA to journal with a night, in my sleeping bag while waiting to fall asleep. It helped me write down the events of the day instead of later when my memory may have not have been so accurate. I stored it in a small Pelican plastic storage case to protect it. It also had some games on it to pass the time of day. I was able to also take out the SD memory cards from my digital camera and look at them in more detail than the camera offered. When you return home you can give a more detailed, day by day, shot by shot acount of your hunt, right here on the AR. Big Grin

By the way, I departed on the 5th of Sept last year. One year ago, today!

I am trying to pack as lightly as possible, that's for sure. I was doing really well_ my duffle was light and was only taking one gun, and then I decided to take the outfitter a rifle as a gift, so that knocked it up another 10 pounds...

Moleskin!

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.
