i just picked up a 22inch barreled 458 win mag and was wondering if anyone has shot a bear using the new 450gr tsx bullet, if not how do you think this would be? Also what velocity do you think i should be able to get with the 450's. thanks

I would only guess that it would work well on a big bear and may be going around 2250.

My 22" 458 win will shoot regular 350 X's at 2520 and 400 X's at 2375.

I used the 350 TSX in my CZ 416 Rigby last month on a brownie and it worked fantastic. They shoot very well out of my gun.

I would think it would work very well for the 458 also.

Just a heads up that the 450 X bullet is a loooong bullet. When I loaded the 450 X in my 458 lott, I had less powder capacity that a 458 win mag with a 500 gr hornady.

My thoughts are the 458's are at their best for Alaska use with no more than a 400 gr pill.

griz

For all the reasons stated already I would pick the original X in 350 gr. They shoot very well in my old MARK X. I personally have not shoot a bear with that load but I did take a moose and a couple of caribou with it. At 2550 fps it is a devasating load for all NA big game.

--- PAUL H ---

Thanks for all info. , in the past , Paul .

Do you have any ballpark on what velocity
( and/or pressure ) you CAN expect to get out of the 450 Gr. , Tripple Xer ? --- what with the limited powder space ?

For any tough Big game , and especially if it's dangerous , -- I like to keep tight on Elmer K's recommendation of a minimum .270 Sectional Density . -- And for Browns or Griz. , -- given their legendary tenacity , -- I'm theorizing that a SD of 300 , and up , would be better yet .

A 400 Gr. 458 , reads just minimum , -- at close to .270 SD . --- I'd sure like to go with the 450 Trip. X for my Alaska Bear Defense Rifle , ( a 20 " bbl. Bolt Gun ) .

What do you think ? ( I have no field experience shooting Bears ) . -- But I do figure to log some time in AK next few yrs. . -- My Son lives up there .

Highest Regards , --- MMCOUGAR .
