Okay this is probably not a smart question but if you paint your stainless rifle with rustoleum, should you still oil it??? And how good is this against rust...

I'm sure Phil will comment, but if I remember correctly he painted his 458 with Rustolem then used it hard for a decade or two. He then stripped the paint as he wanted to repaint it(again with Rustolem).

He found little or no rust on the rifle(IIRC).

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

Jason is correct. I painted my blued steel MkX 458 with Rustoleum 27 years ago and have added layers over the years as wear dictates. But the blueing and steel underneath still look pristine.
I have since done most of my working guns and it works on stainless as well

I spray painted my 9.3x62 with black rustoleum. Worked great, but be careful of bore cleaning solvents as they can remove the paint if the drip on it.

since you are painting bare metal that will be exposed to heat an solvents i would contact manufacture about prep might need acid etch and primer for good paint job
this is easy to do
better to find out than have it flake off in a week

I did the same to a savage rifle in 338win. Damn thing held up real well. Not the prettiest but it works.

A lesson in irony

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing this year the greatest amount of free Meals and Food Stamps ever, to 46 million people.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us... "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because "The animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves."

Thus ends today's lesson in irony.

Rustoleum works extremely well, since I'm not much into asthetics when it comes to working rifles it's great. Alaskan hunters should probably get a can of it and slip it into a pepper spray holster and when needed in the field to protect metal, have at it. Smiler
