I am planing a trip up to Alaska next year. I am interested I salmon fishing and black bears. What months are the black bear hides best? I don't want a bear that is rubbed badly. Thanks Brett

the best hides come in the spring when the bears are just emerbing from their dens, but there aren't any salmon then. you might get in a bit of halibut or trout fishing. the rub spots happen when the nice long hair gets itchy and the bears rub to scratch the itch. in the fall you will find bears with shorter hair but much heavier. if you go late enough in the summer or in very early sept. you will probably run into the end of the silver run and have some decent bears too

I'm finding that hunting and fishing seasons are sort of separate up there. The best salmon fishing in the South central & PWS area is going to be late July and early August. The bear hunting is best during spring and fall. If you are going to carry a big stick, you've got to whack someone with it at least every once in while.
