Hunting Handgun for Brown Bear?

waterratHunting Handgun for Brown Bear?
Anything from the Casull up with the proper bullets would be adequate but I would think a 50yd shot would enhance the killing power as quick accurate follow-up are the norm on brown bears. Probably the best option is to find an outfitter that has taken a few hunters with pistols and knows their limitations.
I tend to use more than enough gun

Strawman419I haven't seen how well they perform, but Hornady now makes a 500 grain jacketed soft point for the 500 S&W. It can be loaded to over 1400 fps I believe. It sounds like an awesome load with probably some awesome recoil.

Bo RichPlease look at the "Big Brownie" post, and if you still want to use a pistol, and face a monster like that so be it. I'm sure your guide will stop him with his .375!

It stopped at 6 steps still trying to paw the ground to reach him when it died. After he cleaned his pants and when he skinned the Bear, none of the .44's penetrated past the skin and fat. When I hunt them it will be with a Big rifle. Good shooting.
Can you share with us what type of bullets were used? One of the 7mms apparantly obviously was the kill shot. What was the condition of that bullet what did it hit (cause of death)?
I assume the 44s did not penetrate because they expanded rather than hitting a suboptimal spot. My point is that I suspect the pistol slugs were not the best bullet for the job.
Expansion in a bear equals no penetration equals no effect.

Here is what I have come up with. It's a 17" (with brake) .376 Steyr made by Match Grade Machine in St. George Utah (formerly Virgin Valley Custom Guns). I have only shot it a few times so far; mainly with factory loads. My best group at 100 yards has been a little over 1" and almost everything has been under 2". I'm getting 2450 fps with 270 grain Hornady's. I'm gonna try to shoot some handloads in it this weekend.

1bubaBeautiful TC. May I ask who made the wood? Or is that the new wood they ship with? I haven't bought a new one since the encores first came out.
