Almost all of the small villages have an airstrip and some sort of service. The best time of the year is after it snows. At that time trails are cut and marked to adjoining villages. We once drove 56 miles one way from Nulato to Galena on the Yukon for 2 dozen eggs. Great trip at night. Along the Kuskokwim River in the winter from Bethel north, the river is plowed and a hover craft offers services. There is also a taxi service running the same route. Problem is that every year someone dies going through the ice. In Golovin one winter 10 snowmachines went through the ice trying to get to White Mountain for a basketball game. One of my substitute teachers lost his life on the same trip but leaving from Elim. Ran over a crevas and the rider crushed him. You might think were a crazy lot. But I drove from Nulato to almost Unalakleet one winter 156 miles one way just to shoot caribou. Winter trips are a lot of fun! | ||
