Hello,
My 66yr old buddy and I are planning to book a brown bear hunt. We are sort of leaning towards a boat based hunt and I am looking for recommendations for a good outfit to go with?

The only two we are firmly considering right now are Brad Dennison (based out of sitka)

AND Phil Shoemaker- I realize he isn't boat based and I can't imagine that there is a better guy to go with than him but he isn't sure if he has any openings for next year.

Who else should we put on our shortlist?

Thanks very much
Dan

Tom Kirstein. He hunts from Ugashik on the peninsula and Dead Man bay on Kodiak. I hunted both area's, Neither are boat hunts but they are both comfortable cabins. Both are great bear areas.

Talk to Bob Hodson at Barney's Sports Chalet here in Anchorage. Bob is well connected and knows all the outfitters. He can give you good feedback based on what you are looking for.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Dale Adams would be on my short list of boat based guides and if Brad Dennison is also doing boats I would add him as well.

If you can do a fall hunt I have openings for 2015 but next spring is full

Thanks very much
Dan

I've hunted with Brad Dennison a couple times for brown bear in the fall. I had two great hunts and saw lots of bears. The scenery cant be beat, the boat is super comfortable, saw whales everyday, both killer & humpback. Set shrimp pots, crab pots, fished, clammed. Food was A+, Minnie is a great cook, cant say enough about it. More than a hunt with Brad and Minnie. Good people.

Alaska Trophy Adventures, Dan Montgomery is not a boat based hunt but does hunt in the Penninsula. He is both affordable and 100% success rate. He averages over a 9' bear. I have hunted at least 3 times with them and will do so again soon.

P. Shoemaker has a long time established record of producing quality and doing it while remianing ethical and avoiding drama.

You can't go wrog with either of the above two veteran outfitters.

Just got off the phone with them and this Fall they took:

Took 8 bears. 12 hunters.
One was wounded and got away

One hunter quit after two days

One Doctor hunted 7 days and had to go home.

Oen guy missed a Ten footer on opening day and hunted 16 days and went home without.

Avg. size 9 1/2 feet

Biggest one was 10'2"

Smallest one 9'1"

Not 100% this year. But, statement still stands 100% most years.
