Hunts planned in Alaska for 2012?

The "who drew" thread started me thinking of any interesting trips planned this year by fellow hunters.

No need to leak out secret spots and I'll go first. Son and I have four hunts planned for this year.

First: Some time in May we are planning a short trip to PWS to drop some shrimp pots and to hopefully chase down a nice black bear or two. We take out our ocean boat and live on it for about 3-4 days and cruise the shoreline. Once a bear is started it sort of turns into a sheep hunt as the terrain is extremely wet and slippery. Scored a nice 6'10 blackie last year with a gorgeous pelt.

Second: Flying into the Wrangells for dall sheep in August. Going to an area we do not know much about so it will be all new to us. Son is hot to get his first sheep and if one decides to committ suicide I'll try to get close enough for a revolver shot. Otherwise, packing out one back to pick up point is plenty enoughSmiler. Really didnt want to go on another sheep hunt but with my son being 23 realize these trips with him are going to be more and more rare in the coming years.

Third: Running our river boat up to the Koyukuk area for moose in Sept and heading up the Dulbi to permit area 812. Area is rumored to be pretty thick with grizzlies so might take one out of its misery if he wants to mess with the camp. If gas goes over $7 a gallon in Galena this hunt might get shit canned and we will try to ffind somewhere closer. Hopefully will use my Heym 450/400 on a moose and maybe the grizzly although I am waiting for a Freedom Arms 475 Linebaugh to come in, it might see some use.

Fourth: If the winter deer kill off is not to bad we are headed to Kodiak for a 10 day blacktail hunt in Nov. We tent it with the arctic oven and it is usually a pretty nice hunt with bad weather shutting you down at least 2 or 3 days each trip. Delicious eating critters.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

The season to travel out of Bristol Bay is over!

Its only a couple of months or so when its unpleasant to be here and as of about mid February its preferable to anywhere else IMHO.

The riding is excellent here this winter and I'll make a half hearted effort at hunting bears. I doubt I'll stay out over night but the QSL/ Snowwolfe/ King .458 will probably go for a couple of rides.

Mothers Day means Mommy want to go camp out on the beach west of here for a week and beach comb/ Waterfowl hunt.

Big summer fishing trips are questionable at best. We've got a big construction season scheduled. This is a pink year and I think the silvers should run well but I wouldn't be suprised if I didn't catch a one.

Moose season I think will yield the usual results but will be a muted afair as have the last couple of years due to the aforementioned work schedule. If work goes like I think it will I'll want to beat it out of town over a weekend, maybe not tag the first bull I see but probably the second or third and beat it back to home work. The QSL/ Snowwolfe/ King .458 being drug out of the gunrack for this one too. During the last of moose season the waterfowling around here is good again so we'll make at least an evening effort or two.

I plan on hunting everyday I can right around where I call home at the end of the Taylor August & September; mostly out my back door; moose, caribou, and bear. 12-15 years back, when we lived in the MatSu, I did a few fly ins, applied for all the permits, ect. Then I had a guy from Anchorage (no offense to urban Alaskans, you guys want to hunt too) shoot a cow in my lane and then he shot the calf too, his mother and him had cow permits. It was one of our local pets kinda thing. I went running out my lane and cow as laying in middle of road. Boy did I get pissed, was ready to start shooting up his truck. I didn't call F&G, just told him to get out and never come back. We then decided to move further out and haven't looked back and also I decided to never go hunting in someone elses back yard, no joke; that's ignorant. So I like hunting as close to house as I can, and sleeping in my bed at night, ha ha. I have a camp downriver but do as well around the house as there. Trouble is ya have to live this far out to have the space to have your own hunting area. Guess I was born 200 years too late.

But I'm already thinking about Spring bear, early moose, and caribou too like you all. I might get with the Indians for some sheep too. Good hunting to all.

On May 17 I arrive in ANC from Philadelphia. Will overnight in town and hopefully see two old friends whom I've had the honor of hunting with in the past: Antlers and DirkLawyer.

On the morning of the 18th I leave for Unit 17, Lake Iliamna, where I will meet my guide, AKShooter, and begin a ten day brown bear hunt.

I have never been too, nor hunted, Alaska, and I am beyond stoked about this hunt. AKShooter said this is a true wilderness hunt and that is exactly what I am looking for!

I took up Jake Jefferson's offer of a snowmobile hunt for Grizzly in the Talkeetna mountains April 20th-30th. I found it on the discounted hunts forum. We ride 70 miles by snowmobile to get to the lodge.

I'm going to take my 10 year old grandson for black bear in May.
Work on finishing the guest cabin at my camp this summer. Maybe start on the tool shed or bath house. (I just love working out there). Pretty much just enjoy being here in the summer.
Early August, caribue in the Alaska Range with my grandson, then TMA sheep AUgust 26th. That ends my hunting in Alaska for this year. I have 3 hunts outside booked, BC Bighorn, Marco Polo and mid-Asian Ibex, then off to Spain for the Ibex slam.

I plan on going scouting for Sheep in mid July. We might go for some black bears near that area.

We will go in early and take our time for sheep in August. My wife wants to go this time and I have the trails tapped in for her. We will be in for 12 days.

We will then go on a weekend jaunt for caribou on dalton. We want to try our bows. We are pretty psyched up for this one.

The first week in September we will be flying into Wrangells for Goats. We will have a short six day hunt. It won't be a death march.

The second week in September will see me hunting caribou and moose with my son and dad on Denali Highway. I pulled a drawing permit and it should be a good experience.

The first week in October will be a return to the North side of the Brooks range near Toolik River for Caribou by bow.

Should have enough fun through this.

Sincerely,
Thomas

I will most certainly get my opening week deer hunt in. Some of the best tasting deer meat on the planet.

Got my cabin reservation over Vet's done yesterday. 5 days of deer rutfest action is never a bad thing, plus it's in an area I am quite familiar with and have hunted for over 25 years.
