I hunt there about once or twice a year. The number of species are limited, but there are good opportunities for non-guided hunters and the game that is there is there in good numbers. There are really only two big game species: black bear, and Sitka blacktailed deer (though there are a sizable ammount of wolves on the island). Black bear hunting is quite good on the island. Spring, in my limited expereince, is better than fall. More bears, and the bigger ones are more active. Though Fall can be combined with deer and waterfowl so there are some benefits there. Bear season runs from 1st of Sept to end of June (if memory serves correct), and deer run from 1st of August to December (double check the F&G site). THe bucks hang up on high ground until the rut. One overlooked hunt there is waterfowl. Alaska had generous bag limit and lots of ducks and geese. When I hunted there last year it was four canandians and 7 ducks plus 7 seaducks per day!!! Grouse numbers appeared to be low though the times I've went. Good road system on the island for "do it yourself" hunting. Possible to fly into Ketchikan, rent a car and take the ferry over. Do your own hunt. Also there are outfitters there and in Ketchikan if you want a guided hunt. Hope this helps! | ||
