FourtyonesixMy 2018 guiding season.
It was a learning experience for him. I don’t think he realized I walk so much and sit so much at work! Lol hard to pack enough food for a teenager I’ll add....

FourtyonesixWell opening day of dall Sheep season has come and gone. I spent it in a laz-e-boy holding my 17th month old daughter. She has whooping cough. For those that don’t know that’s ugly. Really ugly. Your lungs fill with mucus, then you gag, cough till you run outa air, retch till you vomit
Out the mucus. She was on a every hour schedule for doing this for the last two weeks. Needless to say I had to cancel my Sheep hunt. We were able to jockey the schedule around and get the client into a spot next season.

SCHALL53Praying for a speedy recovery Jake. There is nothing worse than when your baby is sick and you can't do much to help.
11 August 2018, 21:02
SnydSorry to hear that Jake. Get that little one healed up. Sorry for you and your client as well. I too spent yesterday in town. Between my partners unexpected life issues coming up and my back giving my a surprise, the sheep hunt ain't happening this year.
13 August 2018, 01:11
farbedoMy heart goes out to you man. Hope she feels better soon.
Glad you and your client could work it out. Still got a long season to attend to. Good luck, and my best to the family.

Joyce had it two years ago. She got her last Tetanus booster at ANMC before one of our Africa trips and they gave her Td instead to Tdap. I had gotten Tdap at my office. I did not catch Pertussis from her.
Pertussis has made a large comeback in Alaska thanks to a drop in "herd immunity" with the anti-vaccine movement.

Sorry for you both, but at the same time happy for you both that you could be with her thru it. I know that just on an average day I'm beside myself with worry about my little one when everything is fine. Whooping cough with me not home with her would put me over the edge.

FourtyonesixMe and my wife plus our oldest four have been immunized. The last two hadn’t been. So far my wife and my two oldest boys have had whooping in the last two months. One right after the other till the baby got it. just not as severe as the baby. My wife’s is getting close, she’s in bad shape. It’s a messed up sickness, vaccinations help but don’t prevent, no drugs can touch it. Antibiotics may help it be shorter or it may make it worse. It’s crazy. We didn’t know it was whooping at first. Till we finally had the baby swabbed cause it just kept getting worse and worse. One doc said no it’s not. The second one did a swab. Thankfully.

Sorry to hear this Jake. The Doc likely told you the symptoms can continue for a month sometimes. Joyce was sick with it for about a week but the cough hung on for a month, getting weaker each week.
24 August 2018, 00:16
FourtyonesixThe little one was severe for almost three weeks. Wife is on two weeks now. The older boys weren’t real bad but it was at least two weeks each.
Figured out the first doc didn’t swan for it because they have to report any case of whooping cough. When we did get w confirmed swab we got phone calls asking us who we were around where we got it who was in our family blah blah. We still have no idea where it came from.
On a side note. Weather permitting I’ll be headed out on a Sheep grizz combo hunt tomorrow. Be good to get back in the saddle.

TWallJake,
Wow! Really scary stuff. I hope your little one is getting better. Kids are tough but it is really scary when they get this sick.
Several years ago we had a measles outbreak in the local amish population. Several went on a mission trip to the Philippines. They got the vaccinations recommended. Whoever made that recommendation assumed they already had MMR, they didn't. They brought the measles back. I don't remember how many got sick. But, 700+ amish got immunized.
Many 'childhood' illnesses are now easily controlled by vaccines. Some people don't think they are very serious because they haven't seen them before.

FourtyonesixBoy ya and we had no idea what whooping cough actually was! Even our vaccinated kids got it, and my wife, but not as severe as the baby did. I guess your suppose to have a booster as well because the vaccine wears off over time.

The booster should be with your adult Tetanus booster. If you haven't had the tDap booster as an adult make sure your health clinic gives you one with your next exam.

FourtyonesixYa I know that now. Only time I go to a doc is for my dot physical and immunizations never comes up at those!
On the upside if the weather improves tomorrow or the next day I will be headed out to the mountians fisnlky!0

Jake,
The DOT exam is more about your ability to safely physically drive a certain level of rig. It's not about your wellness.
Please don't confuse a DOT physical with a good annual preventive health exam. Think of it as a really good oil change in the truck you love. Might help prevent an engine failure at an inopportune time.
Cheers
Jim

FourtyonesixGot back out on a Sheep hunt with two clients. One for Sheep and one for Grizz. Cousins, one had shot a ram with me last year. Morning of the second day the Sheep tag holder slipped and injured his knee, making mountain hunting no longer an option.
I have all my Sheep guys purchase grizzly tag instead of a sheep locking tag as a precaution. Worked out in this case. We spent three days hunting bears, saw 9 counting three cubs. The grizzly client got lead into a grizzly and we were unable to recover it, the Sheep client two days later got a nice 7’11” sow at 250 yards on a less than desirable weather day.
I know my no drinking policy has ruffled some feathers here on AR but on this trip I made a exception to a short little celebration toast the clients wished to have.
We celebrated with a little scotch on the rocks.

FourtyonesixGot done with another one.
11 year old ram and a mid 6’ grizzly for our six days of hiking. Weather has been amazing!

CougarzLooks like he got into a head butting contest with the ram before deciding to shoot him!

Colorado BobThat's a real good ram. What are you doing in that photo? Counting your finger to make sure they're all there !!
Was that grizzly a young sow? Good fur on that bear. Bob

Joeblack2345Getting Core Drilled on a sheep hunt is pretty common and probably expected. Looks like you had a great hunt Jake. Keep us posted on your future hunts this year.

georgeldFirst time on this thread. Great read, beautiful bears. Mighty colorful furs. Never knew there was so much variation in colors.
Jake, and you others about getting injections for things. Prime advice: get one for shingles. It'll cost you, but, mighty miserable for a long time. Dad got 'em on his face and nearly in an eye. Ex G/F got it on her back and chest THREE YEARS AGO and still having problems from it. Soon as I found out she had 'em I got the prevention shot. Sure hope it works.
As a kid, i got just about everything a kid could get except polio that was still hitting hard in the early 50's later 40's.
Good luck and stay safe up there.

Use Enough GunI'll second what George said. I had Shingles and I wanted to crawl out of my body. When the inept doctors finally discovered what it was, it had run its course and it was too late for anything. They now have a NEW Shingles vaccine out and my doctor has highly recommended that I have it, even though I received the old Shingles vaccine subsequent to having Shingles. By the way, that year, I had gotten over the Shingles just in time for kidney stones!

FourtyonesixMedical advise aside, just got home for a week on the tundra. Game wasn’t moving like normal, we did manage to see 13 grizzly but only one lone bear that was to far and to late in the evening. Had a good trip, pulled out a evening early as the same two clients are headed to Kodiak today where I will meet them to try and fill their goat tags as well.

There's an understatement. Spent 11 days hunting hard on the haul road for an archery moose for my out of state nephew.
Calling regularly. Changed up the calling cycle. Nothing mattered. Saw one sub legal bull and one cow. It was in the 50's during the day 10 miles south of Coldfoot. Nothing was moving.

FourtyonesixKodiak. No place like it. 20 miles, three days, 115(mine, I ain’t no spring chicken anymore!),118, and 137lb packs coming out.
Two billies, both about 9.5”
