I have hunted and worked as a assistant guide in this area. I recomend you chat with Dave Morris of Arctic Alaska guide Service. He has several great exclusive guide use areas and produces some nice sheep year after year. I believe Wallace and Bridges hunt on public land.

We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don't, Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!! If you want the Brooks, I'd advise not going into the area ruoghly bounded by the Haul Road on the west and the Middle Fork of the Chandalar on the east. That area is state land and there is a lot of competition due to guides and accesability. I would rather go into ANWR where there is only one guide in an area. That's not to say you won't have competition from residents however. I would advise you to check out the harvest reports posted on the F&G website to see what I'm talking about. I've done quite a bit of analyzing the sheep harvest of the Brooks (GMU's 25 &26) and can tell you that harvest is quite heavy in and around the Your Creek drainage (state land) just east of the Haul Road. This indicatres to me much hunting pressure and an area I'd personally avoid.
To hunt ANWR will probably cost more, (re - access costs) but you should have less competition. I'm also familiar with the Junjik River drainage and would avoid that area at all costs as well. To find a sheep guide in ANWR, I'd contact the Fed. Fish & Wildlife service here in Fbks. for a listing of their licensed guides in ANWR. The Feds. control the guide opertions in that area and they will have a list.
Sorry, I can't reveal where my partner & I hunt sheep. There's only so much I'm willing to do. Hope this helps some tho. Good luck.

Good advise and very accurate. There is a reason for the heavy pressure around and in Your Creek. I would also avoid going with Gateway Guiding....if they are still in business. Guides for ANWR: http://arctic.fws.gov/huntguide.htm

Can you clarify. I was considering a hunt with them, after meeting them at Reno.

Ok, I'll kinda suggest someone I know of that operates in ANWR last I knew. I'd contact John Peterson to see if he could fit me in. He used to work with the man I occasionally helped out in the Brooks. I think he still operates there. I've only met him a couple of times and everyone in camp said he was a stand up guy. Think I'd contact him. Normally, I don't do this sort of thing but... Good luck.

John Peterson has the Kongakut River - never heard anything derogatory about him. I have talked to him once in Ft. Yukon when our paths crossed - nice enough fellow. Not the highest concentration of sheep, but certainly enough to support a limited harvest. Cavner and Julian have what used to be Zeke Schetzle's old area. Zeke used to base his hunters out of the old Grasser strip and primarily hunted out of there on foot. C & J utilize their Super Cub pretty heavily for their hunts. There are a couple of other guides who also have the Romanzof Mountains in their area. My son hunting with me has taken 2 record book rams out of the Romanzof Mts. I have hunted those mountains every year since 1993 except for last year when my son and I hunted Fannins in the Oligive Mountains.

if i was gonna climb in a cub with cavner, i'd make sure i left a note for my wife....
also do some checkin' to see who spends time in the air looking for a sheep for you, thats clasiffied as unethical in the guiding regs but it still heavily practiced in alot of areas. Somone mentioned zeke doing all his stuff on foot, he's got a great rep he left because of how he hunted fair chase, lotta outfits now are bangin' out sheep for the numbers and to keep bookings coming in.
decide how you want to kill your sheep, not just if you want to kill a sheep.

Yup, yup, totally agree - 90% of the hunt occurs before you pull the trigger - game down is just icing on the cake - just my opinion. Sheep hunting "addicts" are addicted to sheep hunting...not sheep killing, again IMHO.

Don't get sucked into believing that the guides on Federal land (ANWR) will give you a better hunt. Alaska Perimeter Expeditions is one group who hunts ANWR just east of the Chandalar and they are a worthless Outfitter. Stay away from them at all costs. They rely on their lease from the feds to gaurantee clients, but don't deliver the goods.

I have a cousin who hunted with Jason Wallace and he speaks very highly of his operation. It is true he hunts on public land and there is competetion from others. I have no personal expereince with Jason.
