I write this on behalf of a good friend and hunting partner of mine.

He is looking to book a hunt for Dall Sheep in Alaska for 2004.

He is searching for an experienced professional with a high quality outfit, who could provide with references.

He is aware that this could be on a too short notice and would consider 2005, but he would be really interested in finding something for 2004.

If you could provide with some contacts, I/he would appreciate it.

Here's the Alaska Professional Hunters Association website with their member listing. He could just contact the guides and find one he's comfortable with. Another way is to try to get his hands on the Dall Sheep reports that USFWS and ADFG put out, find the area he wants to hunt and based on that info, look up guides licensed for those areas.

One other way would be to contact one of the many agents represented here on this board that book hunts in Alaska.

Do not rely on getting a drawing permit, by all means apply for one those are great areas, but %'s are very low for some areas and you just can't count on being drawn. The lucky few will be drawn for the Tok management area or the Chugach Park hunts, but chances are extremely low. Cold Zero got the governor's permit and that is one of the most sought after areas in the state. Lucky dog!!! [Big Grin]

Like with hunting Africa, a little research and realistic goals of what is a trophy, along with a little education of the different areas and terrain, will go a long way in making an enjoyable and successful hunt.

I had been in Alaska twice and I booked with Vern Humble at Rainy Pass Lodge. Both hunts were OK with the guides, the equipment and everything. A very important thing for your friend is that Vern speak spanish really fine. [Big Grin] [Smile] If you need more help visit his Home Page here or email to me. Saludos [Wink]

Don't overlook the Yukon and NWT for some great dall sheep hunting. Al of the NWT and most of the Yukon have all white Dall sheep. In addition there are areas with sheep with a few dark hairs and a dark strip on the tail to , what I call a Fannin, with a prominant grey saddle and many dark hairs, and some trully dark stones in the south. I will be happy to give you some recommendations if you would like.

Montero, I hunted with Terry Overly of Pioneer Outfitters this fall, in Chisana AK; very good outfit and hunt, lots of sheep. Hunt was booked through Keith Atcheson at Jack & Sons, I would think he has hunts available for 2004. Outfit is very remote but in spectacular Wrangell Mountains. I was the only guy in camp that didn't get sheep, but got a good moose. Long story about not getting sheep, but won't go into it. I am going back, probably 2005. Feel free to PM for more information,

Regards,
Craig

Join the Grand Slam Club (www.wildsheep.org) or FNAWS. Thier magazines are great research tools. The guy that runs GSC is very well connected and doesn't mind helping a fellow hunter out with info.

craig;

i received a call from a man from n.y. he was very upset about his mixed bag hunt with terry overly and pioneer outfitters.

there were numerous problems with the hunt. from what he described i would have been upset too. i know he was planning on making an effort to get the word out. maybe u can find the report somewhere and read about it in detail.

i was at work and had to keep putting him on hold, which made him more mad. still not sure why he called me. he thought i hunted w/ that outfit, i never have.

Cold Zero,
I think I was on the same hunt with the gentleman from NY who was pissed about the hunt with Overly, and think I know who he is. I believe he is a restaurant owner from the Rochester area, a very nice guy. He booked through a booking agent from the NE, Pennsylvania I believe, and told me that he expected a Sheep-moose-bear hunt of 18 days I think; he got his sheep and grizzly, but then returned to base camp and had to leave at the end of a 10-day hunt, which is what I was on.
Reading between the lines, it seemed that maybe the hunt he bought through the booking agent was different from the one that Pioneer provided or thought they were providing. The issues that I had with Pioneer were discussed with me by my booking agent, Keith Atcheson, prior to the hunt, and were exactly as he said; primarily that there is a little confusion at the beginning of the hunt, specifically the first day in base camp, and communication is lacking a bit; All I can say with certainty is that Terry made every effort to treat me fairly, which he did, and I will go back.
Send me a PM and I can give you names and more detail, as I am reluctant to gossip specifics on this forum.

Regards
Craig

i am 99% sure that is the same guy i was referring to. still don't know why he called me. that is all i have heard about that outfitter pos' or neg', other than my own knowledge that he has been in business for a long time.

as for the details, i got an earful from him and are not really interested in the rest.

thanks for reply.
