I read of a case where the ice axe user killed the bear by driving the pick end into the bears brain.

Surprising what humans can accomplish when gut reaction takes precedence.

What an incredible scrape. I hope the bear didn't suffer too long. I'd like to hear more about that rifle ...

Wow! What a story! I can't see how that ice axe strike-its depth and the width of the ice axe- couldn't eventually have killed that bear. I wonder if there was any follow up by officials.

Must not have entered the skull.....ie. stayed under the skin. As in any self-defense situation, distance between you and the attacker is paramount to be able to actually do something.

It took a lot of grit to fight that bear with an ice axe. If he's not dead, I'm guessin he's pissed as hell though. Wouldn't want to meet Old Axey in the thick stuff in the spring.

Most likely with 5 rounds fired at close range the bear if he made into a den.

Most likely well die there.

Doesn't sound like there was any follow up.
