Hi Guys I'm planning my next project - a 300 H&H on single square bridge magnum 98 action. Last time I purchased such an action the options were Johannsen and not much else, but I reckon things have changed... Any recommendations? Costs? Thanks ------------------------------ Richard VENARI LAVARE LUDERE RIDERE OCCEST VIVERE

Dakota, CZ, Montana Granite Mountain actions are all good platforms for a Lt. handed 300 H&H project. Being that you want a square bridge Mauser type action Granite Mountain is the only one that will fit your needs, it's probably the strongest action you can get anywhere. Personally I would lean towards the Dakota or Montana actions because of the caliber/weight issue, these actions are on the lighter side. Without looking, but would Empire not fit his ideas? what the GMA goes for or what it goes for plus what it takes to get it up to snuff as reported by others?

Rod, I don't know if George's actions are square bridged they might be, of course Empire can make you a rifle on a Granite Mt. action, or another action of your choice. "An individual with experience is never at the mercies of an individual with an argument"

I Googled-up GMA and see their guns have the square bridge on all of them (I think). How is a scope attached to that? Does one drill and tap holes, then have to live with at set-up for the rest of his life? What is the philosophy behind the square bridge? Why not a common configuration for holes, like you'd find on a Remchester or a Winmington?

Are the left handed Zastava / FN Browning Mauser actions still available, now that KBI - Charles Daly has lost the import link up with the Serbs?

Remington took over the importation of the Zastavas. George

I thought I'd read Remington had bagged the Zastava importing franchise. This is probably bad news. Remington 700 can be had in left hand configuration. I do not see Remington wanting to increase competition.... Come to think of it, I have not seen any adverts for left handed Zastava rifles and actions for 3 or more years. This is a pity. I have a rifle built on one of these actions and they are rather nice. I wish I had obtained another one or two actions and stored them with a gunsmith. I have tried contacting the Serbs, using the Zastava web site e-mail address, but have never received a reply.

CZ 550 375 Left hand and re-barrrel it. I little on the expensive side but I prefer my reworked CZ to my MRC.

Becauae the OP wants to build a .300H&H, not a .375H&H. George

The Square bridge is often machined for various types of scope mounting systems. The reason they are not done from the factory is to allow the buyer to use any of the various types. Here are is an example of bridges machined for Talley rings. ****************************************************************** R. Yes, in 375 length. ****************************************************************** R. In an email I got a while back from Mr Broden "Our action prices are $3,250.00 for all sizes right hand or left hand." I believe they are closer to $3500 now but I may be wrong. One also needs to consider that the action is supplied a little ruff in terms of polish. Depending on how you plan on using the action you may need to spend a little time polishing to get final results. If Teflon coating is going to be used then bead blasting may be all that is necessary. My action as seen in the photos has been polished. Also as noted above the bridges will require machine work for the scope setup. All in all I feel these actions are the Cats meow for a custom rifle. As a Lefty we have few choices for a mauser and I am glad GMA gives us options in all sizes with no premium for the LH bolt. ****************************************************************** R. That is a lot of money (to me at least). But you do get a very good action for your money. I do not know who makes their actions for them, but Empire Rifles, New Hampshire have a nice action too. According to their website, IIRC,the actions are a bit cheaper ($2750 or $2950). They seem to weigh a little less too.

That GMA piece fairly screams quality. It looks massive. I can smell the precision in it...
