I'm asking for advice, so here we go.

My son is left handed and currently hunting with his grandfathers Remington 742 (lh safety)in .30/06. He wants to move to a bolt action and in the future may hunt Alaska or Africa. I would prefer CRF and stainless. I have these options:

Win Mod 70, LH, blue, 7mm Rem. Mag. New $799.00

Ruger, LH, SS, 7mm or 300 win. New $575.00 or so.

Keep looking for a used Ruger, say about $500.00

Wait to see if Browing makes the Model 70 for a fair price.

What would you do? I also want the option to make a .375 Ruger or .375 H&H.

Thanks guys and gals.

You didn't say how old your son was, so I'll assume (knowing what that does) he's adult size.
Considering your preference (and I hope, his) for stainless, I'd get the Ruger in whichever caliber he preferred. This could later be modified to a .375 Ruger with a simple barrel change.
After saying that, have him handle both the Mod 70 and the Ruger. Sometimes the feel makes a lot of difference to an individual.
As for waiting around for a Browning M70, you could plan on giving him this just after they come out, about the time he's married and given you a grandchild. Roll Eyes
Used Ruger? I've never seen a USED LH Ruger in stainless. I'd have purchased it.
By the way, having lefthanded grandchildren and me being lefthanded, I understand your concerns.

The Rugers are nice for the money. You could wait a while for the M70 from Browning, if they do produce it again I wouldn't bet on a LH version for awhile.

I've got both the M77MII and a couple of M70 Classics, I like 'em both. M70s fit me abit better.......

I own both LH W70's and Rugers in ss. If it were me, I would go with the Ruger because it is cheaper. I see no reason spending more for a W70. It will not do anything that the Ruger can not.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Snowwolfe,
My son is also left handed, just like me. When he finally decided he wanted to go hunting I opened the safe and said have at it. I believe most lefty's would have drooled at the sight.
He said Dad I really want my own stuff. He researched and for his birthday I bought him a LH 700BDL in 308. He loves it and it's his. Next on to the shotgun. I showed him a Weatherby, Valmet, Browning, Remington he wanted his own again and now owns a Bennelli M2 LH.
I still can't figure out my wife or kids. Big Grin

The happiest kid in my family is my middle daughter. She's left eye dominant and thinks that sooner or later she gets all my left handed guns.

I have to remind her that her brother and sisters could have left handed kids!
