After seeing the Sako TRG on Top Shot the other night I wondered if there is a LH version and if they have been available in the US. I was wondering the same thing about the Steyr SSG 08. It seems like the European companies have been a little more accommidating to lefties than US gunmakers, but I also know that not much of it gets imported. If somebody knows anything please fill me in.

Did you check their respective web sites? George

Not yet. The filter at work won't allow it.

Beretta hasn't been very good about producing LH rifles since they acquired Sako, so I don't expect to see a LH TRG in my lifetime. Steyr has never imported a LH bolt-action into the U.S. I don't think they've ever produced one. FYI, the Savage 10FP will work about as well for a lot less money. George

I have a left handed Steyr-Mannlicher Model "M" bolt action rifle in .30-06 caliber. It is the carbine model with a 20" barrel, full Mannlicher-style stock, double set triggers, and detachable rotary magazine. I bought it brand new in 1978. It is pretty light and kicks like a mule, but it shoots < MOA with any good 165 grain bullet, both factory and reloads. It doesn't seem to like the 150 and 180 grain bullets as much. Never tried any bullets lighter than 150 or heavier than 180 grains.

Bill, Thank you for the information. I stand corrected. Who was the importer? George

George, I ordered it through the US Army Rod and Gun Club in Worms, Germany, when I was stationed nearby in Mannheim. Regards, Bill.

It's a pity these are not imported here; the Steyrs my friends have own (the steel & walnut models) were very well made and had slick actions and feeding. George

In the early 80,s local gun shop had a several LH Steyrs here. Have never seen any for sale since. Took a picture of all my LH rifles 15 to date and reckon I do not need more! May sell a few in the future. kk alaska

I had a Steyr Model M left hand in 270 w/two plastic rotary magazines. The magazines would get stiff and not feed properly in the cold. I sold the rifle. Accurate and well made but with a fatal (in my view) flaw.

sbsmith, I agree with your assessment of the plastic rotary magazine of the Steyr Model "M". Fortunately, I have only used my rifle in NM and VA, where extreme cold is not a factor, like it must be in AK. Regards, Bill.

A LH Sako 85 in 9.3x62 would please me something awful!! Edit 11/10/2011: i just heard from Sako that they wont be impoting the LH 85 to the US.....another gun maker crushing the hopes of us lefties! 30+ years experience tells me that perfection hit at .264. Others are adequate but anything before or after is wishful thinking.

I also owned one of the exact same Steyr L/H Model M Carbines w/Mannilcher style stock in .30/06 Sprg.; at least for several years until the fellow who used to follow me around the shooting range icreased his own bid to the point of No-Return. I guess he really wanted that rifle more than I did. Got to a point where I finally said, "O.K. it's yours.", but he paid alot more than the rifle & scope cost initally. It was a VERY nice rifle and I never had any issues with it at all; plunck 'em, too, 165 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips. Steyr no longer makes any Left Hand versions although the only then available was the M Model action in .270 Winchester, .30/06 Sprg. & 9.3x62;or at least that's what the catalog stated back then. The used L/H Steyrs that are offered on Egun currently are priced way-y-y above reality. The US importer was/is(?) LSI (or similar) somewhere down south I think? Getting old ..... Cheers, Number 10

Gerry, I remember GSI being the Steyr importer in the '80s and '90s. George

I hope so. Sako said to inquire about improting them through EuroOptics. I have inquired with them but have not received a response. 30+ years experience tells me that perfection hit at .264. Others are adequate but anything before or after is wishful thinking.
