I'm going to be looking for one during the next few months. Did an initial search on Gunbroker and Gunsamerica and came up dry. I can't afford Dakota prices or to have a gun built. Anyone have any suggestions as to brand names I should be seeking?

I know someone that had one on GunBroker for awhile, don't know if he sold it. I believe he goes by BigBoreCore here on AR. I think the rifle was a Remington custom shop. Good Hunting,

Do what I just did, buy a left-handed Ruger M77 in 375 Ruger, have it rebarreled to 458wm with barrel lug (help recoil management) bed the stock ready to go for 1500 dollars. "An individual with experience is never at the mercies of an individual with an argument"

Not knowing what your budget or time constraints are, have you looked at MRC? I gave up trying to find suitable LH big bore at a reasonable price and ordered a SS barrelled action. I also bought a McMillan Supergrade stock. Add sights and barrel band and you are in business. Also you could maybe check with your friends at AMS, maybe they have a few "unclaimed" ones.

Theres a few ways you could do this. I've done the following, but only works if your not in a hurry. I've found stock, bbl, sights etc. on here and other forums. I've bought several bbls from fellas that had plans and they changed. All components I have bought were at super reduced prices because they were "doing a bench cleaning sale". Being LH myself, I have 4 MRC's, they are "good enuff", but by the time your done, its a little pricey. I have a LH Ruger 7mmRM, I bought it with intentions of a fairly cheap "do-over" into a 458 WM, but have since changed my mind to a 416 Taylor or 264 WM. After the cost of the used rifle is outta the way ($500 +/-), its about another $1000 to bbl, and add sights, and the rest of the GS work. If I didnt already have the Ruger I could fairly easily find a LH Win 70 and do the same. And that IMO is the only 2 rifles I would do a LH 458WM on. Jetdrvr, You have excellent timing. My LH Rem 458 is on Gunbroker item # 136533985. I just lowered the price for the entire package to $ 2100. In includes a Leupold VXIII 1.75-6 scope with lots of good quality ammo. STAY IN THE FIGHT!

Not sure about your budget, but you could ask AHR about converting a lefty CZ 375 if there are any more around. Of course, maybe that would be better made over into a Lott. http://www.hunting-rifles.com/index.htm ------------------------------- Some Pictures from Namibia Some Pictures from Zimbabwe An Elephant Story

Very good points. Figure on about $1,500-1,800 for a CRF without a scope. Or you can go the Remington route and get into a 458 for less. Except for one Dakota I own all my left handed bolt rifles over .25 caliber are either Rugers, MRC's, or Win 70's My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Thanks, guys. I've chatted with Big Bore about his Remmy and am looking at it. It's going to be a few months before I'm ready to buy, and I really appreciate the suggestions. The Ruger conversion sounds good, as well, and since I already own a Mod 70 .375, that suggestion also has appeal. Have to get some injuries I received on my trip taken care of before I get into a rifle project, so I'm looking at a purchase within the next three months. Something around $1500/2000 is a ball park figure, and I have a year from today to get her done. We're going back next August 15th, God willing. Many thanks. jetdrvr

With a budget of $2,000 I would absolutely go one of these two routes: Buy a MRC barreled action and order a McMillan stock and add sights. Find a left hand 70 in 7mm mag (for some reason this caliber seems to command the lowest price on the used market). I am sure a nice example can be found for about $650. Have it rebarreled with a premium tube and either reinforce the wood stock or order a nice glass stock. My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Jetdrvr, I have a new lefty MRC Chromemoly magnum action sitting in my safe. I'd be willing to part with it. It's sitting in the box, just as I recieved it from MRC. PM me if your interested.

There you go, on your way to 458'sville Cant really go wrong with a MRC, Winny, or Ruger platform Rod -------------------------------- "A hunter should not choose the cal, cartridge, and bullet that will kill an animal when everything is right; rather, he should choose ones that will kill the most efficiently when everything goes wrong" Bob Hagel

jetdrvr, I have a brandnew, never fired, left handed, stainless, with rings, Ruger 77 Mk 11 in 300 Win... Model: KM77LRBBZMK2 It has a laminated stock and without sights.. Not sure if the laminated stock can be bedded and crossbolted for the recoil of the 458... I loaded (dummy) a 458 with a 500 grain Hornady to the cannelure and tried the round through the magazine...No problems, worked through without a hitch... Did not stack rounds, so can't say if that will be a problem... A re-barrel at McGowan appears to be at about $550.00 and sights are extra... You might want to get a quote before responding.. The Ruger 77 is a CRF... $750.00 shipped and insured to your FFL... Let me know.. Roger QSL

I've got an early production LH M700 Custom Mtn. Rifle in 7mm Rem. Could be rebored to .458 or rebarreled.

Wow! Lotsa good ideas. Maybe I should have waited because it'll be three to six months before I'm ready. Got home, the kudu had fallen off the wall, the ceiling in the gun room had come down, still have a concussion from a fall, and am almost broke from the latest endeavors. I like that Mod 70 idea, 'cause as I mentioned, I already have a .375 and the two would be a perfect African battery. We'll see how it goes. Thanks to all.
