New classic stocks for the Zastava

I have a lot of right hand Mauser patterns, and have been wanting to build a pattern for left hand Mausers. KK Alaska was kind enough to let me borrow his new stocks for his Mini and standard action rifles that just came in from Zastava. I roughed out his stocks to make them more of a classic and then created some patterns. The first two standard action, semi-inletted stocks just came off the pantograph. There are still a few modifications I need to make, but I thought I might get some feedback first.

I straightened out the cast-off, raised the comb, opened up the grip and widened it, added length to the butt, added a little width to the forearm tip, added more structural wood to the interior inletting and lastly, took out the cut-out for the safety so different type safeties could be installed.

Let me know what you think... -Chris

Very interesting Chris, I like the open grip and getting rid of the bottom swell of the grip. I don't like the almost sliver foreend on my 458 so I'm curious about how much larger you made the fore end

I didn't like the tip of the fore end either. This pattern is a lot different in the tip and will work nice with or without tip wood. I will take a few better pictures of the fore end with some measurements and post them soon. The one change I'm thinking of making is to tilt the grip down and add a bit more wood on the next run that will allow for more diverse options for grip cap.

I'd like to see the longer grip, I think that I'd want mine longer with just a metal cap. The way these are going I may have to commission you to put one together for my 458.

It's easy to add a temporary extension to the pattern and make a longer stock. When I finish on the pantograph I can freehand shape a bit different forearm profile to match your rifle's larger dimensions. What is the length of that barrel? Still working on picture update...

Really nice. It's too close to my trip to do anything now. When I get back we need to make a plan.

Most traditional classics don't have a cast off, so I didn't do it on this one. However, I can always custom make that during the duplicating process if it's wanted.

Chris,

I just sent my LH Zastava 458 Win Mag to "TooManyTools" (John) to get the metal work done so I'll be looking for a stock next.

It will probably be 4-5 months before I get it back but when I do, can I send you my stock for patterning can you make one in the classic style above, with some cast off?

Hi Chris,

I appreciate your efforts! I am about to take possession of a LH 7x57 and believe many of us would like to see a pattern for a classic British stalking rifle of the 1920s period.

If my rifle had a cheekpiece I'd want cast and if it did not then a neutral stock would be fine.

My local Cabela's has a Westley Richards 375 in stock and I will try to describe something to you and hope you get it:

the stock feels overall very slim and svelte in the hands; the grip does not feel round but rather and almost up and down oval feeling and the same for the forestock. the barrel is 26" long and mics about .620 at the muzzle. there is a touch of drop between the nose and the heel of the comb and features a drop magazine for a 4+1 setup that still retains the up and down oval feeling allowing for a comfortable one handed carry. I will try posting a link so you can see:

does this work? this is what I'm trying to describe. if you can do that I'm all in!

Phil.

I hated the .660" barrel, the rifle felt way to muzzle light. I'm having John install a new barrel with a .750" diameter (muzzle), square up the front of the action, add a barrel band swivel mounts and a banded front sight.

With the .458 bore in the .750" barrel it should be comparable in weight to my Model 70 in 375 H&H with the .720" diameter barrel.
