I just read on a website for hunting in Spain, that there were 250,000 stags in Spain and each year hunters took 25,000 so in 10 years they will be extinct. Don't the stags there reproduce? http://www.bergen.org/AAST/projects/Spain/hunting.html

I hope the people who wrote that aren't running for a Nobel in maths... Montero, What is the general opinion among spanish hunters about the introduction of new gene pools from eastern europe? Do they prefer to keep the iberic stags as pure as possible or it doesn't matter too much? L

Lorenzo, the opinion is pretty much divided. Not only among tophy hunters but also among land owners. Some people just want the biggest trophy and will basically do anything to get or produce it. Other people are more concerned by sportsmanship and will only consider a pure hispanicus which is not genetically treated. The Comision Nacional de Homologacion de Trofeos de Caza Mayor, or official trophy measuring commission, to which Madrid's delegation I am an advisor, has developed in accordance with a universitary lab, the genetic map of the Spanish red Deer, or Cervus Elaphus Hispanicus. All trophies measuring more than a certain CIC punctuation have their adn checked. Technology, and genes, are not only imported from Eastern Europe, but also from New Zealand. Montero

Montero, Thanks for your very informative answer. I think you have find a very good solution by checking the trophies gene pool. Personally, I don't like those new zeland monsters, they just don't look "real". I don't intend to offend anyone here, is just my preference. I prefer a very thick "normal style" pair of antlers. Thanks again Lorenzo
