Been giving some thought to Mt. Lion here in the states but Argentina seems more affordable. What would a red stag and puma hunt cost me?

It depends. As anywhere else, cost vary a lot, quality of service also.

In the case of Puma, please stay away of those who guarantee such a hunt. Unless it's with dogs (if this matches your style), otherwise...stayway.

NOBOBY serious enough could guarantee Puma.

In my experience the outfitters could ask from U$S 500 to U$S 1500

Red Stags, is another story. We are blessed with very good areas and excellent trophies...at a cost, of course. Think about spending U$S 2500 to U$S 5000 for a good trophy

Areas could be the same for both species

I absolutely agree with Gustavo. Prices cold be somewhat different in some areas, but mainly you could follow these lines. I can quote the Puelches area in La Pampa for free roaming pumas. That is a hunt from blinds during the nights, no sucess assured.

For once in my life I have to agree with the two argentinians (something difficult for me) Big Grin

To make up your mind, this year I was there with a local chap and I asked him how much will cost a puma if a take a client.

His answer was: "a not sure hunt 1000 dollars, and a sure hunt 2,500 dollars...." he said this with a suspicious smile in his face. Obviously the chances of the wild puma are very very difficult. And I wouldn't be so sure with the dogs hunt neither, the cage can be open a little before you arrived and the dogs find the cat and tree it.

A real pity but as everything in life, there are honest and dishonest people everywhere....

Take care and don't go around shouting you really want a puma because you will find it for sure... sofa

I will add an advice, booked a a red stag/wild boar hunt somewhere in La Pampa province (the most far away posible of any town) and ask what animals you can find there, nothing more. Once there, while hunting in a blind at night for wild boar (remember to check the moon phase), asked the farmer how much will cost you a puma in case one appear in the waterhole, don't show much interest than that. Tell him that you was just courious. In case you won the lottery...sorry...in case a puma appears Big Grin you will know how much will cost you.

Ah, and beware of driving around at night with a spotlight for your cat, you can end shooting a frozen one, of course you will never know it as tracking a wounded puma at night is dangerous, better leave it for the morning... Roll Eyes Big Grin

Aren't we southamericans very creative people ? Big Grin

Good luck

Agree 100% with Nainital comments. His knowledge is first hand and expert. Take his word for granted.

Gustavo and Ricardo,
How much friends you have that have had succes hunting pumas? I have been always courious about local hunters success.

Also how often a wild puma appears in a waterhole?
I never saw one, only tracks... Confused
Have you seen any??

I think la patagonia has good populations of puma but they must be difficult to hunt there.
I don't know the current situation in the chaco or other northern provinces, the only thing I know is that in la patagonia are bigger, I saw a picture of one hunted near the Filo Hua Hum river and it was a monster!!!

Take care
Lorenzo

Juan,
The argentinian dogos are fast enough to push a puma to climb a tree or do you use some faster cross breed also ?? Here we take them weight and make them faster by cross breeding them with galgos.

It's normal in the chaco to now and then catch one or is from time to time? Have you ever tried to bait them with a goat?

Lorenzo: it´s a game of chance. Two years ago we were returning from a certain estancia, all guns packed, when at 10.00 A.M. we saw a very big puma siting like a dog in a field without the slightest cover. Perhaps he knew that the landowner´s asking price was too much for our pockets!. Answering your other question, yes, I´ve shot a smallish one, of all things with a 22 L.R. trough the head. Heard them also, once we sleep in the field during a summer night. The next morning I found the tracks 1.5 meters from my head...made me shudder at the time. Also I´ve had one growling to me in the heights of Sierra de la Ventana. Never saw it, by the way. And another night one of my friends turned on a spotlight in the wrong place, I only saw a yellow figure running too fast.. Big Grin

Moreover, most locals at La Pampa have shot a puma during their hunts, most of them just by luck waiting for hogs.
