Hi there,
just back from Estonia.
Very nice place in the Parnu province, 2 hour far (on South) from Tallinn by car.

Very nice rooms in hunting house and beautiful lands.

Was a very hard hunting experience due to the number of hours of hunting and a very poor number of hour sleeping.

The timing was:
03,15 wake up
04,30 first breakfast
05,00 start hunt
09,30 back home for second breakfast
11,30 sleeping time
15,30 second wake up
17,00 lunch
18,30 start hunt
23,30 back home
0,30 dinner
01,45 sleeping time
03,15 wake up
... and so on

3 days of hunting for 4 roe (and one fox)
The quality of my trophy is not so high but in the area I saw 3 very nice bucks, one was taken by a friend, the other 2 are still running.
I love my last trophy (non typical)

Rifle: hand made Fanzoj kipplauf in 6,5x68 caliber, Partition Bullet 125 grs, Zeiss scope 5-15 x 42.

Ciao

Good hunt ! thumb I assume the nontypical antler was broken while still in velvet... You should build a wheelchair with off-road tires !

Nice animals!

As you say, summer hunting can be very tiring, but it is a damn sight better than working!

Did you find the 6.5x68 produced a lot of carcass damage? Have you used it on larger game yet? Not a calibre we see every day over here.

Those are some beautiful, old roe deer. Nice shooting, too. Foxes get missed way more often than people hit them.

Thank you to all gents.
I'll post some photos of the rifle soon.
It's a very light rifle (usual for kipplaufs) and I love to use it.
Is not an all around rifle: with my 300 WSM I'm more confidential on non dangerous game.

With this Kipplauf and this load (3 shot on 0.8 MOA) 125 grs Partition @ distance between 100 and 300 meters was a great caliber with no big meat damage and fast kill (usually the chamois and roe are dead on shoot).

I killed also deers with this rifle, one very big and some female and young @ maximum 200 meters, all was a one shot kill.

I never kill pigs with this caliber, the only limit for me is the short distance: it's too fast and also a great bullet as partition @ short distance don't kill right.
The last estonian roe was shot @ 45 meters in front chest. It was no bullet exit hole, the roe was killed by knife. Opened, in the chest, heart and lungs was very damaged, the blood was semi solid (same effect on weatherby's calibers) but we don't found the bullet: too much speed @ short distance equals no fast death for games, always.

So, @ right distance, 100 to 300 meters for me is a very good rifle, I was very lucky: it's not usual to find a good shooting rifle in this caliber specially a kipplauf, but I found it...

For close range in Europe I use an express Beretta O/U in 8x57 JRS --> SUPER thumb

Ciao

El Dodexe,

Thanks, sounds like you have some really nice rifles.

What ammunition are you shooting in your Beretta O/U?

I'd like to build a custom kipplauf or falling block with a stutzen stock. It would be wonderful to find a Heeren action for a reasonable price.

If your shooting a 300 WSM and having problems with it, you might consider a softer bullet like the ballistic tip.

I have really good results using the ballistic tip on smaller game animals. The wound channels are incredable, and they always act like you hit them with the hammer of thor.

I saw a wildboar hit in the neck with it and it was dead in 16 yards. The spine was missed, but the arterys were severed and he ran shaking about 16 yards until he was dead.

In my express I use the CDP Blaser 196 grs (like the Thor's hammer... Wink

My dear friend Hans Fanzoj in Ferlach (Austria) has very nice kipplauf and falling block, also with stutzen stock, but the prices are reasonable on the quality but very, very high nilly

I use for my 300 WSM 3 type of loads, all with 165 grs bullet:
for close range Trophy Bonded BC (10-90 meters)
for medium range Nosler Accubond (100-180 meters)
For Long range Nosler BallisticTip (200-350 no more)
All loads with Vihtavuori N560 and 66 grs (on TBBC) or 67 grs (on Nosler Bullet) OAL 72 mm on Nosler 70,5 on TBBC.
Obvsly with quite same POI.

The rifle is a MAG with Montana action, Lothar Walter Barrel (fluted), Jewell Trigger 3 lev and MacMillan Stock. Topped with Zeiss 2,5-10 x 50, Talley mount.

I agree with you the round is very affordable on game and my rifle shoots well (0.3 MOA with Ballistic, 0.6 with Accubond and 0.8 with TBBC)
This is my all around rifle.

For dangerous game my 500 Jeff... Big Grin

Have a great day, ciao

Sounds like we think alike for loads.

I am planning on shooting the 225 grain .338 Accubond in my 340 Weatherby.

Accubond is a hell of a nice bullet, and the price is reasonable.

What scope do you shoot in your 8x57 Beretta.

Congratulations!!! Looks like you had a lot of fun.
And thank you for visiting our beautiful little country.

The hunting hours really are tiring in the summer. It never really gets dark. We have noticed on our area (not very far from where you were), that the best time for pigs is about 1 a.m. and roe about 4-5 a.m. Not much point in sleeping then. Big Grin

I'm off for some roe and boars myself today, should get there in the evening. I dont expect to get much sleep this weekend Cool

The only down side to hunting wildboars in the winter in Estonia is no roe deer to shoot at.

I was thinking about a winter or early Spring hunt.

I wonder how many wildboars a guy could get in that time.

That was a very fine report, and great hunt. About the 6,5x68, There is other fine bullets that makes it works great like, Nosler Accubond 130 grain, Swift bullets, very popular here in Norway for the 6,5 rifles in various cartridges, the Oryx bullet from Norma is a very good one , Woodleigh 140- 160 grain Protected Point i think is a good deer bullet and boar round if it is used there.

Again fine report and great trip.

Sorry for the thread-hijack, but I'm back from my little trip to the countryside.
I only got the chance to go out one evening (too much work at the farm), but still managed to shoot a decent roebuck. About half an hour or so after sundown I sadly missed a huge buck i was hoping to bag (it's rutting time and it happily pranced off to the woods with a doe before i got a chanced to shoot, tried to get it on the move, but missed). So, quite dissapointed, I decided to go home. But, as often the case, on the last patch of grassland before the village and the first houses, I spotted another one! Although young and much smaller buck, I still decided to shoot it, as it was my first buck-hunt this year and i hadn't shot any yet. It was one of the stupidest bucks i have ever seen: it saw me, probably mistook me for a doe, and started aproaching me, I simply stood upright on the road and waited. Shot it at around 20-25 paces. Sadly, because I was alone, there was no-one to take a proper picture. So I only have some snapshots of the skull. It still needs proper cleaning and bleaching.
