Hey, don't blame me -- it was made in Buenos Aires. Actually I think he has good technical knife-making skills but may not have spent much time hunting boar with a knife. But really, with a couple of Dogos holding the boar, how much knife do you need?

Trust me, I never doubted that you had the tools. In fact I think I've seen both before. I'm looking forward to seeing the results when you use your own bullets on game.

Good luck on the hunt. I'm jealous, but maybe I'll get down there in a few years. In the meantime I'll be taking our local boars with more mundane armament.

I believe you, but does that mean one Dogo on each ear and two in reserve? Big Grin

I have only hunted hogs with dogs once, and we were not lucky, only finding a medium sized sow. We did then what many in Texas do with a lot of their hogs -- hog tied her and put her in the truck. Obviously that would be much harder or impossible with a very large, annoyed boar.

Charles Helm: I was at the shooting of a wild boar weighing 270 kilograms and know of many others which are even heavier. A pack of 4 dogs are needed and you must be very, very fast in helping them. A hog that size can be stopped only for a minute or two at most. The dogs are in serious danger and often are killed or severely wounded (this being the main reason for my lack of enjoying this sport). Add the dirty terrain, plenty of thorny trees and bushes and perhaps a snake for spicing and you have your belly full. In the North, you should take into account the vinal. The vinal is an undescribable member of the forest which has thorns as hard as any steel nail and several inches long. Our gauchos ride their horses with leather hats and legs protectors...and their faces are full of scars from the vinal.
Good luck sticking wild pigs in Argentina!!!

I think that is the dilemma many face who enjoy hunting boar with dogs. It is what the dogs love to do, but it also claims their lives too frequently. The boars where I usually hunt do not normally get nearly as large as 270 kg -- there is just not enough high-quality food or there is too much competition for the available food.

I hate to do it since the last time I discussed the subspecies and differences in Argent buffalo it went south in absurd arguments, but check out the three very distinct horn arrangements.

HOW LONG ARE THE BLADE LENGTHS ON THE BOAR KNIVES. THE KNIFE BELOW IS OF MY OWN DESIGN AND 9.5 INCHES IN JUST BLADE LENGTH. IT WAS MADE BY A Journeyman Bladesmith in the ABS OUT OF THE MATERIAL I CHOOSE; PACIFIC MADRONE HANDLES, BRONZE FIXTURES, AND 5160 STEEL.

Is this enough???

[if I mispell a lot today, bear with me I just had oral surgery and a fine pain killer to boot]

The knife is my design from a drawing I did as a 9 year old. It has a 5 inch handle and a 9.5 inch blade that is 1/4 inch at the hilt and tapers forward. Chuck Richards of Fortuna, Calfornia made the knife for me. He is fabulous at his skill and has a very quick turn around time.

"...The species "Bubalus bubalis" includes nineteen breeds. Three of the most economically important ones are present in Argentina: Mediterranean (70%), Murrah and Jafarabadi. The three of them are double purpose breeds (milk and beef), and sometimes they also serve as labour animals. The first bubalines to arrive in the country crossed the Uruguay River, mainly from Brazil, in the 1910’s.

Which breed is this one?

The snake they are talking about is the Fur de lance. It is second to the cobra only in deaths worldwide and it accounts for more bites and deaths in central and south america than any other snake. It has HUGE FANGS and delivers a HUGE DOace of vemin. If you get whacked by one of these and are not near mediacl help ;you can kiss you ass good bye. At the very least you will lose the bitten limb. I have lived and worked in Brazil and I have seen what they can do and it is not pretty. Take the leggings and USE THE DAMN THINGS. In Costa Rica they call it the "Velvet Killer". It is really a beautiful snake but damn I would not want to be bitten by one.
Have fun

Juan,
I have not heard that name before. This is very common as every locale has their own name for their local snakes. What is the scientific name of your snake and what does it look like?

The yarara is the most common specie in argentina (should probably say all long South America), and certainly one of the most dangerous one...
its genre is Bothrops and from its 31 possible species (out of which only seven can be found in Argentina), the most common one is called alternatus ... thus the following pictures are from the most common variety, the bothrops alternatus ... you shouldn´t fool around with this reptile !!

Happily I managed to "capture" one of these snakes less than a month ago ... now its skin is shown in the sheath of my puma white hunter Cool Big Grin .... you know what ? it really looks NICE !! Smiler

The guy (in Bazil) we had to have our heads up for was Bothrops Jararaca. He or she is one bad dude or duda. You do not want to be whacked by one of these. It really is a beautiful snake. but just looking at one makes me weak in my knees. The GDMOF just looks evil. In Argentina they are NOT EVERYWHERE (I HAVE ONLY KILLED ONE), but you do have to keep your eye open. I rarely venture into the bush. I let the bird boys go look for the lost birds. THey live there and they know their way around and IMHO they know what is what and hell, that is what they are paid for.

Juan, I use to dream of hunting Africa when I was a child. But, after viewing yours and Andre's posts and pictures Argentina has replaced Africa. Damn, I do love your Dogos. One gamey animal!! A very fine animal, they remind me somewhat of certain American Bulldogs.
