Yesterday at late night I was watching a film in one of the documentary channels. Much to my astonishmet Ive learned that the Forest of Gir has some 345 Indian lions. There in a two year period they attacked 86 people, killing 16. I didnsee corrective measures taken, but got sleepy and went to bed. Perhaps one of you knows what happened next to the endangered cattle breeders there.

so you are saying that because these 86 people [free and slow food] went into the domain of the lions "I didnsee corrective measures taken"-
so they need to put patrols around the area to keep the people out? is this what you are saying?

These people and their cattle always lived in Gir. The Indian government should do something about the lions, fencing or other "corrective measures". Im no PETA advocate, by the way, but the free forces of Nature no more reign over the area of roughly 1.200 square kilometers.

The Forest of Gir is the only place left where the Indian lion still exists.

Perhaps the human population which is probably many hundreds of times larger than it was a couple of hundred years ago needs the controlling.

Still it has been shown elsewhere in the world a successful hunting management system saves animals and often also human lives, instead of the ridiculous ban on all hunting in that country.

PS 1200 square kilometres sounds like a very small range for 345 lions.

Gir is probably the worst managed sanctuary in the world. The original site has been encroached on several times by local tribesmen and political interests have seen successive governments do nothing about it. The whole place is badly crowded with lions and hunting is banned so nothing is really done to keep numbers in check. No worthwhile attempt has been made to relocate some of the prides to other parts of the country though the politicians make speeches about this whenever there is a WWF delegation here since they need to make a pitch before bringing out the begging bowls.

It is tragic and the whole thing stinks! [Mad]
