One of the ranches we hunt in the Texas hill country has too many buffalo cows. The owner said move them out. The price is $500.00 per hunter in groups of five hunters or $600 per hunter in groups of less than five. You can get a great mount or a big hide to tan and lots of meat for the freezer. At this price I think I just found what my wife is getting for christmas. He has lodging on the ranch and walk in coolers. If you are intrested get with me and we will try to get a group together.

We have all ages of cows. They range in size. I would say a good ave is 800 lbs.

Hello;
I just heard on Paul Harvey the other day that the 2000 Bison[that is the correct name] Ted Turner bought to stock his ranch in Montana for $2000. each, now had a market value of $ 300.

I would be interested also, please feel free to e-mail me at: bowhunter0556@msn.com

My only concern is that I have jury duty scheduled for Jan 8th. Not sure how long it will last. Also, is there a preferred weapon we must use?

Thanks for the info,
Bill

There is no limit to how many you want to take. As for as wepons, you can hunt with a bow or gun as long as it is enoulf gun for the job.

Bighorn,
Can you post some of the details on this? While I know it's not free ranging, let's talk about the acreage of the place, and the hunting methods, and most importantly, all the fees assocaited.

if this was a big ole place, that required HUNTING (Ray, you have ruined me for this.. I want to do a mountain hunt with you), I mnight can help you fill a couple places. But, if this is a SHOOT, please let us know. Best to call a thing what it is, and ensure that expectations are met up front.

Please do not take the above negatively, I am just trying to make sure I know what I am getting into.

First off, I have to say that Bighorn is a first rate Gentleman.

he and I spoke last night, at some length, about this shoot and the real hunts that go on there. I am impressed with the spread of game there, and that they do HUNT other game, nilgai, to elk, to sable, with goats, red deer, and hogs thrown in for good measure.

The details of this Bison cow are that they are, now, in 800 acres of hill country land. They do tend to bunch up in the flat areas, but there is terrain, hills, a canyon, and lots of other game. I don't believe this to be a straight up "shoot" nor do I think it's Ray's wild, cliff hanging bison hunt.

For the tropy fee, and if you want the meat, hide, etc, This is a fair representation. His daily rates and lodging rates are reasonable. His skinning, quartering, etc, are also fair.

All in all, if you want either a challenging shoot, or what could be a fun stalk, this sounds okay.

Now, if he would throw in 2 meat hogs or 1 trophy hog.....

If he requests, I'll be glad to post his website URL, even though the pricing is out of date.

Jeffe

Sorry I have not got back with some of you. They called me at the hospital last night and I am just getting home. My dad has been very sick and the Dr. said this time he would not be going home. Keep me and my family in your prayers. Please don't stop asking the questions about the hunt. This is a great help to me to set down and get my mind on something else. Talk to all of you soon. Thanks, Rodney

Bighornhunting1,
As I am reading this after your phone call to me, thank you so much for keeping your end of the deal, to give me a call. I hope and pray that all works out well for your father. My father-in-law passed away this past May. I have really missed him during his past hunting season. He went with us, but hung out in camp. It sure was lonely there this year. As soon as I find out what my jury duty in January entails, I will be in touch. To others checking this out, I am a willing addition to a group if you decide to go, just let me know.. e-mail me at:bowhunter0556@msn.com

Thanks...Bill

On to other subjects:
American Bison, January, Texas, $600 per animal
I will be driving a long way. Can I get the meat processed locally and quickly?
Taxidermist for the hide?
Ok, my 45-70 longs for a Buff.
Please send me the details. dunnd1@yahoo.com

I'm just up the road, in Kerrville. I might be interested, if someone can let me know the dates available. If I can't make the AR shoot, can I come on my own?

As for processing, I don't know about Bandera, but I highly recommend Bernhard's in Kerrville. Call them at 830 367-2995.

Got our hunt booked for next weekend. Does anybody have a good source for having the hides tanned or someone who does a good skull mount?

We are back on line and ready to hunt. We just got in from a hunt and took four big buffalo cows. One with a bow and three with a rifle. The guys from New Mexico can really shoot. They set up on top of a mountain and took three cows at 120 yards in the botton of a canyon.I am sure they will tell you the story when they get home this next week.

We just returned from our hunt with Bighorn (aka Rodney) and must say that we had a great time. As with any exotic hunt, it is what you make of it. We elected to spot and stalk our cows, and they gave us a merry little chase. It truly amazed me as to how varied the Hill Country terrain can be. We chased these 800-1000 lb animals for about 1/4 mile on foot before we were able to get a shot.

Is it a shoot? If you want it to be, it can be. There is no doubt that one could very easily drive up next to these animals and shoot them out of the truck. But, I know a lot of places that you can take mule deer and elk the same way. Take it for what it is, a unique experience to harvest a unique animal. We took ours at about 120 yards, with weapons ranging from a PSE ( 30 yard shot, the bison chose to die in a river, but that's another story) to a 7mm Rem. Mag., to a .375 Ultra.

Rodney offers a wonderful deal for the money. He is a very likeable Texas Cowboy, and goes above and beyond the call of duty to make the trip an experience. The "bunkhouse" is cozy and rustic, and offers a warm bed and shower after the day is over. I would strongly recommend this as a "fun" trip, and plan to do another hunt with him in the near future.

Myself and one other just returned from our bison hunt with Rodney. I had previously hunted for wild boar on a fenced property, and was not impressed with that operation. It was too small for the amount of animals on it.

Let me say that we had a GREAT time and are already planning another trip next winter with Rodney. He was outstanding. He and his wife took good care of us, our animals, and the ranch. I guess the highlight of the trip was our "photo" safari on the last day. As was previously stated here, Rodney will help you with the hunt as you want it. It can be a canned hunt or you can walk the ranch and stalk them.. your choice.

I do know that myself and some hunting partners will be returning next year to hunt some of the other animals present on the ranch.

I would HIGHLY recommend this hunt as a father/son, or family trip. The selection of animals is wide-ranging, and Rodney's hospitality is second to none. We were bowhunting them, and did have to take the second one with a firearm, cause they were really uptight. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at: bowhunter0556@msn.com

Badboyz,

Thanks..Yes, Rodney is great. We are also planning on a return trip next year. Should get the meat back late next week. The look on the customers' faces at the processor plant was priceless...they were in complete shock. My pickup truck bed was full! As I said in last post...there is a red stag there waiting for me and my Mathews bow to return!!!!
