| Les, was there this past July w/the family, beautiful especially around the Na Pali coast (Kalalau area). I did not hunt, but asked several locals and they said they hunt pigs inland via stands. I saw one large boar and a few goats while driving/hiking. There did not seem to me to be huge numbers of animals, and if I were to go back I would again plan on hiking in the North and some inland, but no hunting. Somebody needs to cull some chickens though! Email if you would like general info, regards, Bill |

| I grew up on Kauai. If you still hunt with a rifle it'll be hard to get you on pigs. If you use archery, you could hunt Unit G and have a pretty high success rate on goats or pigs. Almost 100% if you spend the night. You can go in 2 miles to the first valley too and there is a ton of game. Your chances would be much higher if you went in 6 miles though. Koke'e provides some decent oppurtunities for stalking with a rifle. Most of the other hunting areas throughout the island are so thick and hard to navigate that you need dogs. I would say 95% of hunting on Kauai is done with dogs and knives. Some guys use hounds and rifles to block trail. There are small pockets of open forest (30yrd visibility) here and there if you're familiar with the hunting areas, but those small pockets are surrounded by tons and tons of thick nasty ulehe fern and bluebush. You basically are forced to hunt small patches of fruit trees with very poor visibility( good compared to the rest of the places). If you want some more info shoot me and email and I can get you headed in the right direction for a dyi hunt.
Niihau would by far be the most succesful hunt. Expensive, but if you're into a rich man's shoot and not a poor man's dyi hunt than go for it. You'll shoot tons of animals and probably even a few trophies. Like I said Koke'e has a little more open and "huntable" areas. Im not too familiar with the area but can tell you what I know if you want, I've been on a half dozen or so hunts up there. There may even be a blacktail deer season going on right now. |

| Depending on where you're hunting (Niihau/Kauai) will call for different guns. Common guns around the north and east sides of the islands are short lever actions, short shotguns 20ga/12ga, 30carbines, 30-30s, 44 mags, mini30s etc... Open sights are almost a neccesity. The pigs more or less max out around 200lbs and the distances will be under 50yards. You dont need much, I would bring whatever brush gun you're most comfortable with under 100 yards. |

| EvBouret,
There is supposed to be a big ranch on one of the Islands that has really good Mouflan Rams, do you know of this ranch. If so what Island and what is the name of the ranch?

| Just might be the Parker Ranch. But then again, it's only one of many but the biggest one.

| Yeah, most likely you're thinking of Parker Ranch on the Big Island. Good place to hunt if you wanna pay money to shoot something. But the public hunting areas really are loaded with game if you're willing to hoof it a bit. Here's a pic of a sheep I got 3 weeks ago, my first ever with an open sighted 30-30 from about 30 yards. Right after the shot a trophy ram with more than a full curl came out, but I was already limited out. Bummers Evan |

| The expensive part of a hunt on Niihau is the helicopter for access to and from the island. Other than that you sleep on the beach and bring your own food and water. It is a no frills hunt but you sure get a lot of shooting time on one of the cull hunts to help keep the pig and sheep populations in check. You can also hunt eland there but it is pricey and is a driven hunt. Not to my liking when I can hunt on my own and stalk pigs and sheep for hours in some fairly rough terrain. Like I said lots of trigger time. Kauai has good pig and sheep populations but you need to have the area scoped out ahead of time or know someone locally. Geoff Hashimoto knows just about all the hunting places on all the islands so you might want to give him a call. I am sure he will stear you in the direction of what you want. You also might want to talk to Eugene Yap as well. These two guys know the in and out of just about everything hunting related in the islands. I am sure you were thinking of the parker ranch.

| Hawkeye47- I do not believe it is the Parker Ranch that you are referring too when you asked about Mouflon Sheep. I believe you were referring to Kahuku Ranch which was leased and operated by Eugene Yap of South Point Safari's. Unfortunately this ranch was taken over by the National Park Service which is in the process of eradicating the sheep population due to habitat destruction. I wish they would would live capture at least some of these animals and relocate them. This area has some truly magnificent gene's and it would be a shame to lose it. Just my thoughts!!! Aloha!!!

| I have a close friend who lives there and hunts pigs with dogs and kills them with a knife. He did this until he found himself with a broken back after falling off a cliff and needing a helicopter to haul his crazy butt out and to a hospital. He started his hunting with a rifle with iron sights but he ran out of ammunition (Remington 141 in 32 Remington) so he started using a knife and never looked back. |
