Yeah, when I walked up on him my first thought was he'd broken a claw and it was regrowing, but then noticed the entire toe was messed up. The pad on that toe was much smaller than the others - no idea what's up with that - maybe injury? I'd be interested in any of our experienced guides' take on that...

I've had several folks wanting to know if this was a Peninsula bear (or Kodiak bear) - no. Upper Nush is very a good guess!

Congrats on a great bear! I hope you got more photos! I’ve seen damaged toes a lot, maybe from moose kicking them or breaking them walking in rocks or something, even bit by other bears. One bear had two different size feet, one tiny foot and one normal. I’d guess pinched nerves or something distorts the growth? Just a guess. Beautiful country!

Interesting. Some kind of nerve damage might make sense - limiting nerve function to the toe - atrophy, etc.

Hearty congratulations!

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Correct bullet placement, combined with the required depth of bullet penetration, results in an anchored animal...

Congrats on a great Bear, well done! The toe issue could be a genetic defect, especially with it showing up on multiple occasions. Looks like a prime hide, are you doing a life size or rug?

The hide tanned well, but to be honest he had pretty short hair. I haven't yet decided whether to rug or do a life-size.
