I have taken both Kuban and Dagestan tur and they are without a doubt, two of the most physically demanding hunts I've experienced. The Caucasus Mountains are beautiful. More than once, thoughts of falling off a mountain entered my mind. My Kuban tur hunt was booked with Profi-hunt, the Eastern tur (Dagestan) with Shikar Safaris. Both of these hunts were very rewarding and the epitome of a mountain hunt.

Many thanks MAH, I have already hunted dagestan tur in Azerbaijan and I agree with you on the fact that the mountains there are steep...Is the western caucausus more or less the same? What about the game population? Many thanks! Regards, Bharal76

I hunted near Sochi, Russia. The mountains are extremely steep but without the sliding shale rock. Didn't see near the numbers of tur as I did in Azerbaijon. Took a Caucasian chamois on day one, and the tur on day eight of a seven day hunt. Tough hunt but looking back on it now, it was quite an experience. Wrote about it in SAFARI Magazine, I believe it was titled "Get Tough or Stay Home"

Other than the horns, are there any physical differences between the two species? Did any of you experience the driven hunts practiced in Azerbadijan?

The Eastern tur are smaller and darker than Western tur. I have taken tur on a driven hunt as the locals prefer this method. It's challenging to judge trophy quality this way not to mention running shots are the norm. I also took a much bigger tur by spot and stalk and I would much prefer to hunt this way.
