For all the Wisconsin hunters out there. I just heard on the news about hunters being shot while deer hunting. Did I understand this correctly? If so, do the authorities have any idea as to the motive, i.e. animal rights activist?? If this is happening I hope they catch the s.o.b. very soon.

Ok, now I got it, 5 hunters were killed and three others wounded. Seems there was a dispute over hunting area, when a man in a tree stand was asked to leave he didn't take it to well, he started firing at them. Near a village of "Exeland" The police did arrest the shooter.............. What was going on out there!!!!!!!!!

Widow, I hunt Douglas County Wisconsin every year--my family has since the late 30's. We're about 30, 40 miles as the crow flies from the murders. I think the total ended up at 6 dead/2 wounded. And this is where the story gets interesting... Let me begin with what's known for certain. This fellow named Vang (if I'm not mistaken) gets "lost" in the woods, ending up on the property in question--property owned by by the "Link Bro's" family. The Link brothers, out of Minong, Wi., are the big name in the Northwest part of the state. In fact, used to be that if you lived in Wi. and bought a boat, they were one of two dealers you purchased from. This is to say, they have a lot of money, a lot of land, and, word on the street--a lot of attitude. But I digress. Many people know the Link family, either personally or professionally; the Link family "parcels out" areas for their aquaintances to hunt on. Such was the case for the property Vang "wandered" onto. Upon confronting Vang for trespassing and using a tree stand on the property, two stories emerge--Vang's story, and the victims'. According to the victims (who, I should point out, were not direct relations of the Links), after being asked to leave, Vang walked off about 40 yards, stopped and removed the scope from his rifle (SKS, 7.62, 20 rd clip), turned and opened fire. In the initial firefight, he killed 2 or 3 and wounded at least one, who radioed back to the cabin for help. A second group of Link friends arrived, with Vang killing part of this group. After driving-off the survivors of the second group, Vang then approached the remaining wounded (one or two) and shot them in the back at close range. According to Vang, the whole group confronted him at once, surrounding him and taunting him with racial slurs. As he walked away, they opened fire (whether with the intent to harm/kill or only threaten/scare is unclear), whereupon he returned fire. Vang was "apprehended" later that day by two hunters not related in any fashion to the Link party. They had recognized his "back-tag" and escored him to authorities already in the area searching for him. Vang's rifle was out of ammo. Authorities are also seeking (as of today, I don't know if they've found) two other Asian men suspected of being in Vang's company the morning of the shooting. Further, this crime bears an uncanny resemblance to one three seasons before, where a landowner in Westcentral Wisconsin was shot in the back after confronting a trespasser. Authorities in that case were looking for three Asian, middle aged men, seen driving a late 90's grey Nissan truck. The same description of the party, number of suspects, and vehicle associated with the 2004 murders. Vang is from the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. He does own/drive a truck fitting this exact discription. And he did purchase a non-resident Wisconsin deer/firearms license for the 2001 season. Now for what is, admittedly, conjecture and speculation (I will try to refrain from slander--you must be the judge)... There is the possiblity, albeit remote, in my opinion, that Vang is telling the truth. Why do I say this (other than the obvious)? Upon hearing of the shootings and those involved, one of the long-time members in our party said "I bet those Link boys did threaten him, and I wouldn't be surprised if they shot first. They're nothing but a bunch of bullies and thugs! Vang's best defense will be if the DA selects a jury from [Sawer] County, because the Links have as many enemies as friends." Finally, lest anyone read this and somehow get the impression that I'm biased against Asians, let me simply say this: I'm a Lutheran pastor. frairmeier You only have part of the story right. living in Sawyer county working in law enforcement in the area. The Links had nothing to do with the shooting. The family that were shot were out of rice lake. Vang is currently being held in the Sawyer county jail His lawyers are doing the normal pre trial stuff I am sure it well be years before he is sent to prison. I know the minong area well to The Links do own lots land and they are protective of it. But not more then a MT, Wy ,ID rancher or any other large land owner. At least they are not Ted Trunner who allows no hunting Just after it happen there was a lot of post here do a search around the last of Nov 1st of dec and you well find lots of info. Go to www.freerepublic.com do a search under the poster ladysmith and he compiled all the articles into a easy find thread. lots of info but you only have some of it right.

You also have part of the story wrong. Mr. Turner does allow hunting in some of his properties. I am told he hunts. I would think that he lets some of his friends hunt. And I know he allows youth groups such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters hunt his properties. When I lived in Kansas, I mentored a young man through BB/BS. The local chapter had an outdoors oriented program and both I and my "little brother" had the opportunity to participate in a cull hunt at Mr. Turner's ranch outside Medicine Lodge. Those does sure tasted good.
