I had been wanting to hunt the Himalayan Tahr for some time but wanted to do it in Nepal. Unfortunately Nepal closed and there was no certainty when it would open again, so I booked a hunt for free range Tahr with James Gray to hunt the Tahr the old fashioned way by walking and climbing after free ranging animals.

I flew Air New Zealand, the service was excellent. I did inform the airlines about my rifle a week before my flight. Everything was painless during the check in. You check your luggage to Christchurch but will need to clear customs at Auckland and then re check the luggage to Christchurch. The service was excellent.

The gun entry process is very simple. No semi autos are allowed. You collect your gun and bags and proceed to the Police office on your way through customs. You have to fill a simple form, make sure you have your outfitters address and $25 in New Zealand currency in hand (exact change).

The hunt consisted of climbing from about 1000 to 1500 feet and glassing every day. I walked about 4-10 miles every day.

Day five I was able to shoot a representative trophy. The overall experience was very good James provides an honest no frills hunt for free ranging animals and it was a delight to hunt with him.

What a truly wonderful hunt, and a real hunting experience. Makes me want to return. Unfortunately I cannot walk like that any longer, but I would love to try. I have looked at your photos several times. Such beautiful and unspoiled country.

Thornell, woodjack, markhor and greghud thank you. I use a 7 mm STW built by Rifles Inc. with 160 grain NP bullet. It is a light rifle that I use for my mountain hunts.

Congradulations with this great hunt. This is my kind of hunting. Once saw a Tahr up close in the Kumbhu valley in Nepal. Great looking animal.

good stuff aziz 12inch tahr is trophy class and its cool that you shot it free range the way you did, too many tourists just get a helicopter up the mountain everyday and land beside the tahr and shoot it.

its great to see someone from overseas hunting the way its meant to be done and not trying to look like a hero by shooting some big farm breed animal behind the wire or from the chopper

at the end of the day your only cheating yourself if you take short cuts and take the easy option

Looks like a great hunt...I would like to do the same thing one day. Can you tell me his rates for a back-pack hunt. I will assume they are less than a chopper hunt. I could not find a price list on his web page.
