Have seen similar heads from Hokkaido Sika, taken by hunters from here. Absolutely awesome.

Hunting.... it's not everything, it's the only thing.

Mark... is it still archery only for hunters that are non-residents?

Looks like Dybowsky species with size of the body and horns
Honestly, it’s not regular Japanese sika species

Serious stag!

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Few people I asked and who know sika hunting from many years of hunting them all said Dybowsky
Regular sika are size of smaller whitetail
Interesting is, that this is from Hokkaido so my feeling is it’s not native there so high fence? Or released there in past?
Anyway, not shitting on anyone’s parade, just thinking out loud
Dybowsky are northern big sika from Russias far east and they re beasts for sure

Isn’t there like 10 subspecies of Sika Deer?

Way back on AR there was a gent who regularly hunted them on Hokkaido and shot some serious monsters.

Those found in Hokkaido are far bigger than other Sika and are completely natural if I’m not mistaken.

Google Hokkaido Yezo sika
One of the largest sika subspecies, definitely like Dybowsky sika
Never knew that as I always thought they were only on mainland in Primorsky kraj, I North Korea and Manchuria
Always thought all the Jap Islands sika were smaller species
Super interesting and it shows you how little sometimes we know…

Folks,

I spoke to my client and the outfitter doesn't want any info on the Sika hunt to be up on the Internet. Just so there is no misunderstanding I did not book this hunt for my client. This is something that he did on his own and has done repeatedly with this outfitter.

Bottom line is you all know as much as I do about the hunt.

Mark

Kelly not related to hunting directly but i spoke with a lady from Japan last week here and she said some prefectures are thinking to lower the access process for firearms as they have a lot of issues with bears, boars and deers. she was not sure about gun definition will it be shotgun or rifle or even opening for foreigner but the aging of the local population of hunters is a big concern over there. so there is maybe a hope ...

Phil...good info. Let's hope that something of this nature actually comes to pass in Japan.

I have done several hunts in Hokkaido Japan for Sika Stags, not sure on the Outfitter of this hunt but I most likely know who it is.

If you want to know more you could PM me.
