Thanks for sharing that article. My father's first ever big game hunt back in the early 1960's (before I was born) was for jaguar in what is now Belize. He had zero big game experience and did not even own a rifle. He ended up shooting the #2 B&C record jag on that hunt. Hunting became his passion. He ended up hunting all over the world for 40 years, right up to his death a few years ago. The jaguar still sits above the fireplace in my mother's living room, along with the Bonne & Crocket award. 20 or more of his other trophies now reside in my home. My father raised me as a hunter and hunts with him occupy some of my finest memories. The jaguar is not only a beautiful animal, but I see it as part of my family heritage. Maybe someday there will be huntable populations again. Let's hope so.

I really enjoyed your post and I thank you again for sharing the article. It brought back great memories of my father.

Very cool. Looks like a big mature male! My heart always give a skip when I see field pictures of leopards, Jaguars, tigers & snow & clouded leopard.

Friday,
Do you happen to know who the guide was for your father's hunt back in the 60's?

I knew an old man when I was little, he's long since passed away, and he had guided for Jaguar in South America but I'm not sure where.

His name was Capt. Bob Snow and he lived in Kerrville, TX towards the end of his life. I've seen old footage of his hunts. It was very old school.

The Hunt goes on forever, the season never ends.

I didn't learn this by reading about it or seeing it on TV. I learned it by doing it.

Great story, thanks for sharing. Without hunters no one would have even known it was there!

That was a beautiful cat for sure, and today rare in Arizona, and northern Mexico! When I was a kid back in the early 50s hunters killed a Jaguar every couple of years in New Mexico, and AZ, and Mexico.

The Jaguar being on the totally endangered list is a bunnyhuger’s dream-world induced listing. The Jaguar is no more endangered than the mountain lion in it’s main habitat.

Every year completely new species are found in the vast unexplored jungles of South America. My take on that fact is, If they don’t know what IS in that jungle, how in hell do they know what ISN’T in that vast jungle!

The antis walk down a few trails and drive down a couple of roads, and up a couple of rirvers, and because they don’t see a Jaguar, they must be almost extinct. Hell there are people in those jungles that speak languages that no one but them can understand because nobody knew they existed!

I would say the Jaguar is probably more plentiful than most cats of the world but nobody goes into their habitat more than a mile or so from the rivers. Thousands of square miles of unexplored jungle exists in South America.

All just one man’s opinion, and worth no more than what you paid for it!
