trigger,

Your desires sound achievable with the exception of the 75% chance of success. This is a VERY high success rate on elk. Your best bet would be to book a drop camp hunt which will run MUCH less than $5000 (closer to $2K) and be happy with a 25% chance of success like everone else. This is the reality of elk hunting unless you have BIG money.

$5k is a tight budget.

I'll check with my brother-in-law on what he can set one up for. He's newly started up a formal guiding business here in Utah, but he's been guiding people on hunts for years. Elk are "easy" for him to take, they're herd animals. He prefers to hunt desert mule deer and hunt solo. Try tracking one big buck for 3 days over slick rock anyone?

He used to guide hunts in NM, a guy had a 26,000 acre ranch and ran hunts in October. They got 26 bulls one year, and two bear (varmints). Cost was $8000 for one week. Most of the hunters were Texas white-tail bean-field hunters. The "hunters" typically carried WAAAY too much gun (bipods, super-duper magnums, mega-scopes, etc) and were out of shape. He enjoyed dragging these guys all over the hills until they had some real stories to tell before he let them shoot at a bull.

I can get pretty close with a $5300.00 fully guided hunt in Northeastern NM plus $490 for a license...Very good success rate with a realistic chance of a bulls 6x6 in the 350 class.....

Hey Trigger, sorry that i dont can give u any further information on alk hunt.
Im from Germany (and we dont have elks here, justthe smaller species of red stags) but i was looking for a elk hunt too.
But with a students budget plus the flight to the US plus accomodation and plus plus... and the high guiding rates i stopped thinking og hunting elk!
But as i took a look on the sides .. i think its a good offer.
But i guess you have to recheck the prices and maybe if you have to pay extra for ??? so at the end the offer is not cheap at all. Understand?

Funny thing is. that the elk trophies of the second link look very small...for an elk! they look like red stags! Or am i wrong?

cheers Konst

I have taken a deeper llok in the page and there is a question which u may can answer me.
Its with the tags..have i understand it right that u have to aplly for a tag? so could it be that u wont get one?
e.g. you like to make it a combine hunt and so aplly for two or three tags ( deer, elk, moose) but just get a moose tag..that would mean you cant hunt the other two species.
And whats all about sheep hunting?
They ell something of a pointing system?
That means if u like to hunt sheep, you first have to apply for a tag, than book a hunt and if u get a trophie you have to pay the trophy fee!
For me as german, a "funny" system

Maybe your answers will help me!
