Out of around 1888 hunters on the Weyerhaeuser Vail Tree Farm,(Oct 12-13) there was 110 deer, 2 Bear, and 1 Cougar bagged. Dry Weather and 99% road hunters! Fuzz
amosgreg, The area covers about 6 Townships, drive in access is only on weekends during modern firearm deer season.Only 2 gates are open, west side and south side. There is some walkin access everyday of the season. Those who walkin average more and bigger deer. Also if a hunter gets a deer in the walkin area contact security and you will be escorted in to get your animal. Fuzz
Fuzz, So if I understand this correctly, There were 1888 hunters in this area and only 113 animals killed. Sounds to me like there were a whole buch on non-hunters playing the game of I see that deer standing in the road... Bang! Dry weather makes things difficult but not impossible. Did you connect? If so Pictures?

Blacktail are the most illusive deer in the US in my opinion. It's no wonder no one on the TV shows hunt them. Not only do they live in the thickest stuff you can find, they're mostly nocturnal. I've watched 'em lay down as a hunter walked within 5 yards of them and did not know they were there.

Fuzz, I live in Eatonville and hunt in GMU 667, the back side of the vail tree farm. It was so dry in the timber that you could have been more quiet wearing wooden shoes on a concrete floor walking through frosted flakes.
I have been hoping for rain. Season goes untill the 6th of Nov. Here in oregon for blacktails. Love those last couple weeks for chasing big bucks. We need rain though, hunting big blacktails is almost impossible in this dry stuff. Blacktail Country Homepage

It's not that they are all road hunters here in Washington. But they stopped hunting Cougars with hounds over 10 years ago and lots of deer here are now Cougar shit.
Jay, Same thing here in OR. Sad as the sound of a pack of hounds opening up on a lion, or bear, in the bottom of a canyon is one of the most amazing sounds I have ever heard. Ahhh good memories though.

I'v had that happen before, try a diferent browser. If your'e using Netscape try Internet Explorer and vice versa. This weather is'nt helping in the least.we'v seen 43 does and 3 spikes the last few weekends but not a legal buck.Picked a helluva year not to draw a doe tag.The bucks are there but keeping their heads down and theres no going in after them.Like walking on potato chips.hoping for a good rut and soon, got until the 6th of Nov. I have a doe tag for the Trask unit but haven't seen a deer yet where I've been hunting over on the Wilson River. I think Monmouth is in the Trask unit. Are you hunting near home? Where are you seeing all these does?
My brother, myself and a good friend all tagged out on Blacktail bucks over in the White River Unit. We actually had snow on the third day and that's when 2 of the three were taken. I wish it would snow this weekend but would settle for rain.

Dennis,We'r hunting the Alsea and Stott mt. units which are the closest to Monmouth. The Trask is about 20 miles north of here, other side of hiway 22.We started there opening weekend as all the timber co land here was locked down due to fire danger.Saw one doe and a 3x4 bull before the temp rose to 85+ degrees. It seems like they'v been doing a lot more logging this side than what we saw in the Trask.Of course that was BLM land we were on over there.Thought we were going to get some rain this weekend but they changed that forecast.Everything we'v seen has been hugging the drainages, sticking close to water. Are you out of Tillamook or that area?I lived on the coast for 40 years until I moved up this way. I'm in the Milwaukie/Gladstone area just south of Portland. During the first weekend we could use our doe tags we saw a couple spike bull elk along the Wilson/Trask boundry; then we go hunt elk this last weekend during the Wilson/Trask early hunt and don't see any elk. Figures. Seems like there was a guy behind every tree. I'm going to try the area just north of hywy 22 this Saturday. Never been in the area but hopefully we can find some open ground to check out.
