Because I'm posted to an isolated area I get a great little bonus call RLLT. Basically it's $1250 to go where ever I like. Now I was thinking of sambar in Victoria, but then I thought"what about NZ". My sister-in-law is a Kiwi so accomodation shouldn't be a hassle and her uncle has offered to take me out hunting.I think he lives in Hastings? somewhere like that(I'll have to check that) My questions are.
1. When is the best time to come?
2. What do I need licence/permit wise?
3. I'm thinking of trying for a red deer, are these still available on public land? What else is available?

Any other info would be handy

Thanks

Bakes

Well now , if you are going to be in Hastings - you will be very close some of the best Sika deer hunting areas available . Also reds , but come and test your wits on the wily Sika for a challenge .

As far as licences/ permits go that will depend on where you hunt - if you hunt on Department of Conservation controlled lane you will need a hunting permit from them , privately owned land will be at the whim of the landowner .

If you wish to import a firearm I would suggest contacting your customs people to find out about export/import permits to get the gun out of and back into Aussie . My understanding is that the NZ Police will issue you with a visitors firearms Licence at your point of entry , it would pay to check up on that prior to arriving tho....

Best time to come ? - weather is pretty unsettled up til Christmas most year and if you are used to NT temperatures you will surely freeze your bollocks off here at present . I would suggest Feb/March/April but avoiding the start of the roar and any long weekend about then , unless you want an additional bodily orifice , cos hunters die in our bush in alarming numbers about then .

No doubt others will have advice too , probably contradict mine , but thats my suggestions anyway. Have a great trip . [Smile]
