I'd like to hunt Ibex in Spain in July of 2007. The hunt would be scheduled prior to the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona as I'd like to treat myself to both for my 50th Birthday.

Advice & direction are appreicated.

And YES, I intend to run with the bulls.

Contact Fernando Saiz. i don't have his address with me but he should be in the SCI magazine. i hunted with him for all four species of Ibex in Spain and highly recommend him.

I do conduct hunts for the four subspecies of Spanish Ibex, plus the new SCI recognized species, the Balear Boc.

I am afraid season closes on the 3rd Sunday of June in the region where it closes the latest, but anyway I would advise against hunting so late in the season.

Weather is too warm and Ibex are either too high or too low and in thick cover where no stalking is possible.

Good luck with the bulls! Let some of the locals advise you on what to do and I promise it will be an experience you won't easily forget.

Thank you! I've found conflicting information on Ibex hunting in your country. Some web sites say season is open in July other not. Maybe this is old info??? Unfortunately, I believe I may only visit your country one time so adding a hunt would make it a very good trip.

I hunt Boar here in the States and enjoy it very much. I would prefer to hunt game that is specific to Espaina. Are there any other oppertunitys at that time of year reasonalby near Pamplona?

Thank for the advice on the run, I will certianly talk to the local people. I'll most like have a bit of wine with them too! Big Grin

Boss Kongoni,

The "Running of the Bulls" is a great way to celebrate your 50th birthday. My husband and I went with a group in 1992. We were there for the opening ceremonies on July 6th (a not to be missed event). July 7th is the first day the bulls run and my husband ran on that day. The people of Pamplona are fantastic. We stayed at Tres Reyes which offers you a little buffer zone from the festival craziness.

Boss K,

Even if the hunt doesn't work out, go to Pamplona anyway. San Fermines is an amazing spectacle. As Kathi says, go to the opening ceremony on the 6th. Last time I was there, the cops lobbed tear gas into the plaza to disperse the crowd after the ceremony. If you run, get there early to pick your spot. Stay away from "Hamburger Wall" at the 90 degree right turn onto Calle Estafeta. C. Estafeta is the best place to run - but the tightest. If you really want to run with the bulls, that's the place to be. Make your room reservations several months to a year in advance.

Ah Spain,

Since that's where I am writing this from and that's where I have lived for 20 months, I will give you my 2 Euro Cents.

You all know there are four kinds of Macho Montes in Espana. Basically two in the West and two in the East. One near Seville, One in the Ronda Mts, One by Barcalona, and One inbetween those two.

None of them are true ibex, they are wild goats. They are truly wild goats like Bezoar and Sind wildgoats from Asia. Ibex have knobs on their horns and have a different chromasome count. We all call them ibex because they are ibex looking.

http://www.diana.dk has reasonable but not great deals on Spanish Ibex. The only way to get a really good deal is with one of the outfitters in the Spanish hunting magazines.

The Spanish outfitters that advertise in Peterson's Hunting, Safari, and the American ones charge twice or three times as much.

The site you list says one specie if huntable in July(my trip window). Then other sites say no??...Very confusing. Confused

I may have to look at some of those options as I don't see making more than one visit. ASo many animals to hunt , so little time!

Thanks for the tip! beer

Has all four species of Ibex, and is at the rate the Euros pay not the Americans which is much lower.

I lived and hunted in Spain up until August of 2005, you will find it is too hot to hunt in June.

Flights are cheap, why not come back and hunt ibex in the winter, when the animal will make the nicest trophy.

D99 - This trip is more about the Bull Run than a hunt. I do l;ike to experience hunting in our countrys with fellow hunters of differant cultures.

In most areas of the world an enjoyable Boar hunt can be done in a few days at any time of the year.

I'd love to hunt Ibex in Spain, and run with the bulls also, but after looking at the link D99 listed I don't think so. $10k for 2 hunting days and one ibex Eeker makes our last trip to Namibia look even better. We hunted 12 days and took 7 animals, including airfare, for $11k.

Nothing about Spain is cheap except for the wages!

Seriously though, one of the smallest groups of middle class in Europe.

Big game hunting in Spain is called high hunting for the prices alone.

I deleted the part of my post about how one could hunt TRUE Ibex in Mongolia for a about the cost of the Spanish "Ibex". With no insults directed toward our Spainsh friends intended. It's not the same, for that hunt investment...I want the real thing.

That aside, a day or two boar hunting would be a nice addition to the hunt.

Poor wording on my part. I ment to say one (from the USA) could do the whole Mongolian Ibex hunt, including travel for the cost of one Spainish Ibex trohpy fee. Wink

Since you lived there, I would appreciate any advice on travel, food, wine. etc, etc.

Grazie molto per il vostro aiuto

The food of Spain, yep I have some suggestions.

Any resteraunt named "something de Parilla" Usually a persons's name and Parilla means BBQ or Grill. So Jaun de Parilla (Jauns Grill) will serve the best steaks and fish.

Solo milo de Tenera (tenderloins of beef) con pimienta (with peppercorn gravy) y patatas fritas (fried potatos). With a side of pimienta frita (small green peppers fried in olive oil) and manchango queso curado (salt cured goat cheese). The peppers and cheese will come first and later the steaks gravy and fries.

Chicken scewers are also fantastic, most fish is great on the ocean and terrible inland, and I supposed you should try paialla as it is one of the national dishes. The fish one is interesting, but the beef one is better.

Expect poor "perceived" poor service from waiters in resteraunts, as they are used to calling one a waiter instead of the waiter checking on them.

Siesta slams the whole country shut between 1300 and 1600.

While very few in Spain have a lot of money they do have a very nice lifestyle with siesta, and tons of off time. Don't expect money to open doors. I bought my double rifle there and got a call to pick it up after the paperwork had cleared. I got there a few minuites late and was told they were closed. It was a mom and pop store, and I had to wait 4 hours for the bastards to open up and give me my $6000 rifle.

They are easy people to love, but they wear on you little different.

Unlike the Italians who don't normally drink to get drunk, in Spain they don't seem to think that way, and bars are open from 2000 until sometimes 1000 in the morning.

I have never cared for wine, but most of it in the south is Sherry. Spanish Gin from Puerto de Santa Maria (the port Columbus sailed from) is fantastic, almost as good as Bombay Saphire.

I don't care for Spanish beer either, being a Guiness man, but you can usually find 2 or 3 English beers and maybe a Paulaner in most places.

In tourist places meals will be E10 to E15 per person and drinks and sides will usually put it at E20 per person. They don't beleive in a bottomless fountain drinks. So you will pay for every coke.

If you have travelled then you know that Dr Pepper, Mountain Dew and Root beer are only available in the UK and USA, so if you have said afflictions you might want to throw a couple in your carry on.

Oh, and this is dumb, but so very common with Americans. The Spanish are European or White or Caucasian. Everyone of the people who came to Spain and worked for me always tried to call them "hispanic or Latino" they are not, and really don't like those words.

Good luck

KOngoni,

In my opinion you should not pay too much attention to excesively simplistic, limited, and plagued with false topics, views about about my country.

Travelling spain with a bag full of cans of English beer is ... well, I'd rather keep the adjective for myself.

I do not have the time to write my recommendations here but give a telephone number and I will give you a call.

Montero

30oC+ and the sun is shining.... Who wouldn't want an icy cold Cerveza???? (sp?)

Of course Montero, Spanish beer will pale into insignificance against the Cypriot Keo but then we'll forgive you that as you have more big critters than us that need shooting!! Wink

Montero,

Mt Dew, Dr Pepper, and Root beer are soft fountain drinks or pop. Not beer.

I loved Spain, it is the jewell of Southern Europe. And I have lived in or travelled almost all of them extensivly.

Some very Spanish concepts are hard for Americans to take. Siesta is a huge pain in the ass, and nothing is open on Sunday unless you live in Madrid, Barcelona, or Sevilla.

I have lived in Italy for 8 months, and I would get on a plane tommrow if I could get out of here and go back to Spain.

Seth,

A bit off topic, but both Dr. Pepper and Mountain Dew can be found in the larger cities of east and southern Africa now too. Plus quite a few Euro countries including my own. Wink

To bring it back on topic, I'd love to hunt Ibex in Spain one day, even if they are not "genuine" Ibex!

BK,

It's 7 pm and you are walking in the main part of town with your stomach grumbling. You know that you can't go to a resteraunt to eat as none will be open for another hour, and they probably won't serve you until 9.

Lunch is a hard one to figure out as well. Sometimes they open for lunch at 12, but most of the time it is 1300.

The bars will be open if you want something fried and fast or a tapa.

I said I loved Spain, not everything about it.

Just like the USA. I would never again live east of Nebraska by choice. I most assuradly don't love all of the USA, hell I don't even like half of it, but I love the country.

There are many places in here in the USA where I enjoy visiting but wouldn't want to live in myself. But, I believe one could say that about any nation.

When I travel I want to eat the food & drink of the nation I visit. I can eat all the American food I want here in in the USA.

BTW - I live East of Nebraska Wink

I never said that I didn't like Spanish food, I ate it almost every night.

Anyway, you will have a great time. Hopefully you will get to take in a bullfight. It's a very strange, sad, and amazing experience. I went 3 or 4 times, wasn't sure if I hated it or loved it.
