Located in the Canadian Shield, approximately 500 miles north of Winnipeg Manitoba, Big Sand Lake Lodge is the only lodge situated on this 60,000 acre/70 mile long pristine lake. One of the premier fishing lakes in Northern Manitoba, Big Sand Lake commonly yields some of the biggest fish in Manitoba. The Fishing: Northern Pike that can go 20- to 30-pounds, 4 to 6-pound walleyes and 30-pound-plus lake trout. Fishing will be fully guided out of 18 foot aluminum boats with a casting deck/40 hp motors. All fishing will be catch and release. The only fish that will be kept are for shore lunch. Fly–Outs: There is also the option while there to add a fly out to one of the 4 other outpost camps/lakes they fish. These will be a day trip returning back to the main lodge in the evening. Your guide will also accompany you on the trip. Cost for this add on would be $300.00 a person. The Bear Hunting: The last manager at the lodge, who is no longer with them (new manager), never really pushed the spring black bear hunts, even though he should have. Most of the bear hunting that was done, was in the fall, in conjunction with their fall moose hunts.......if time allowed or as an incidental. Due to this, hardly any bear have been harvested in the last 5 years. The bears have actually become a nuisance and they are worried about the calf (moose) population. They need to take some bears! If patient, hunters should expect bears in the 5 ½-6 ft. range with larger bears a real possibility. Color phase bears are also present though not in huge numbers. Hunts will be baited and you will hunt out of ladder stands in the evening, while fishing during the day. You may even have the opportunity to harvest during the say as bears are quite often seen while out fishing.
