Archery Hunts:
Season date is October 1 - December 31, 2013. Hunts are conducted anytime throughout the season, but mainly in November & December, with the exception of a couple of areas where hunts are good in October! All hunts are 6 days of hunting, some tags are valid for either specie, but only one deer. Hunts are almost exclusively spot & stalk, with a few tree stand exceptions! THESE TAGS ARE GENERALLY DRAWN WITH NO PREFERENCE POINTS, AND LANDOWNERS CAN PROVIDE A LANDOWNER VOUCHER IF NECESSARY!! Whitetail Only permits are now available.
Muzzleloader:
Season date is October 12 - 20, 2013. Hunts are all spot & Stalk, usually 6 days of hunting, and some tags are valid for either specie. Tags are generally drawn with 0-1 points, but in the SPECIALIZED TROPHY UNIT, THEY CAN BE DRAWN WITH NO POINTS! This hunt is a tremendous opportunity for a big buck, in a season that is under-utilized by hunters.
Rifle:
Colorado has two separate rifle seasons on the plains. In 2013 the hunts will be Oct. 26 - 30 or Nov. 1 - 5. This hunt is usually easier to draw, requiring 1-4 points depending on the unit! December rifle hunts are as follows, Dec 1-6 or 8-13. These hunts will take 1-4 points to draw, depending on the unit. Please note, both seasons offer a whitetail only tag in several units. We offer these hunts on several of the ranches with high whitetail populations, and the tags can usually be drawn with no points!!!

safari-lawyerI recall a pic of Wendell's deer (the 3x3) beside a 200+ NT mule deer. The 200 class deer looked like a runt.

Ya, that's true! I think the other buck was in the 190's, but regardless - Wendell's buck made it look SMALL!!!

Jerry HuffakerLook at how big the antlers are and the mount compared to the man holding them, he was an absolute beast of a deer. Must have weighed 350lbs.
08 February 2013, 19:01
Wendell ReichI think your estimate of 350 lbs might be low!
08 February 2013, 20:15
drummondlindseyI'm pretty sure this buck fought Godzilla(and won) in Japan before moving to CO. He weighed well over 1000lbs and if you were to grind up his antlers it would cure cancer

Wendell ReichHe could look in the window of a second story building.
If he bent over.
He killed 14 people in Nebraska before fleeing to Colorado.
It took 83 people 14 years to eat all the meat.
08 February 2013, 20:41
Wendell ReichHe actually jiggled like a bowl of jello when he ran, and that is no joke. David Morris and Davis Shashy were in camp filming for "Bucks of Tecomate".
David's cameraman, Matt, filmed the hunt for David's TV show.
Too bad they forgot to edit out the first running shot I missed.

Hey, at least he got the second running shot on film.
Those 80 yard running shots are a bitch! Way too close. I prefer to give them a good couple hundred yards before dumping them.
08 February 2013, 20:49
dogcatIf I recall, you did that on a buffalo a few years ago. Missed close in then drilled him at 350 yards or so? I may be mistaken.
08 February 2013, 21:17
Wendell ReichGosh dogcat. Why you gotta drag out all my skeletons?
No, that was a "first shot" at 355 yards. I followed that up with a beautiful performance of skill and marksmanship by shooting another Buff at 123 yards with my double.
In the ear.
Maybe that's where I was aiming. I'll never tell.

500 grains of .470 in a Buffalo's ear is quite deadly, by the way.

Aaron NeilsonWendell has NEVER hit anything on the first shot!

Actually, do you know how difficult it is to pull off that second shot as your guide is saying, "Oh my #%*!#% you missed!"
That takes real skills! Concentration under pressure.
09 February 2013, 05:01
Mike SmithMaybe it is me as well but I seem to fubar the close up broadside shots. Add a little distance or a running target and its a different story. I think many of us overthink the dink shots. when they are moving and a bit farther out we tend to shoot more instinctively like shot gunning. At least that is my theory anyway.

Better use a lot more symbols to give an accurate description of what was said
