Is anyone offering hunts in Tanzania in January now that it has been opened once again? If so, is any of our usual Ar members offering something here

Diego,

We are actively booking our Masailand concessions of Lobo and Lokisale for Jan-Mar '11. Come out and hunt a monster buffalo with us.

Both areas have very large buffalo, but one would play hell doing better than Eastern Tarangire NP (Lobo/Lok and Kitangire) for giant buffalo. Not many places you could go on a 10 day buffalo hunt and have a legitemite chance at a 45"+ buffalo.

And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

how will three extra months of hunting effect the people that booked for july, aug, and sep as I read i don't see extended quota numbers. If hunters come in jan, feb, march and bag out it seems a lot of animals will not be availible in regular old season. how are outfitters handling this. Unless more quota it seems the areas will get pounded pretty hard and how do you spread out animals. Is everyone hunting in these months or are some guys not going to hunt both times, it kind of seems like a problem but it may be just fine.maybe Mark can shed some light on this as i know the areas he books for are top notch and i am sure they have a plan.

gerryb,

The quota is unchanged. We will sell the same amount of hunts they will just be spread out over a longer season. The extension of the season has no effect on the following years quota. The animals available in Jan-Mar '11 are part of the '10 quota so if you booked a full bag safari in July '11 all animals on quota will be available to you.

Hope this clears that up.

thanks mark,
i think you can see why i was asking.I know you will have great hunts in those months as the big buffalo should be all over those areas. i was thinking(not a good thing) that they would be 2011 quota and it might be a problem.

Good question and I can see why you asked it. Quota year runs for July-March rather than from Jan-Dec.

That would indeed make sense considering the hunting period has basically been extended by 3 months.
IMO current quotas will also be increased across the board as I don't see the Govt. giving an extension of 3 months for nothing Wink

i am not sure raising quotas is the best thing or will happen. they have the quotas for a reason and that was part of my first post if they start shooting three extra months of quota that may not be good.mark just a question i know that buffalo and ele should be good at those times but i do not know cats. i would think lion follow buffalo but i don't know on leopard, probably will not have much effect on them unless calving is during that time

gerryb,

Buffalo and all plainsgame should be superb. Cats wiil be harder to bait because of all the walking protein available but success should be about the same on lion as there will be spot and stalk opportunities. Elephant may or may not be there. Adam thinks there is no way to predict their movements.

Come March we will have a better idea of just how good the extended season will be. To my way of thinking with the season extended by 60% and the quota staying the same it has to be good for the areas.

Look at it from a logical point of view: Why would the govt. extend by 3 months if it were not for profit?
The existing quotas have been set for a 6 month period and those in the Masailand areas in particular, under normal circumstances, come December, have almost been exhausted- also bear in mind that the extended period is not as fruitful throughout Tanzania.

The quota on Elephant is never met due to the stringent laws regulated by either weight or length so for the moment you could say there is a healthy credit as far as quota availability is concerned.

Leopard are not affected by the migratory pattern as they are territorial/residential creatures whose prey are the smaller antelopes, and when foaling takes place will go for most anything.
Lion would definitely be on the move but not necessarily after the buffalo when there are wildebeest and zebra in their thousands which offer easier pickings and which are their main targets.

Where the northern circuit is concerned, outfitters might consider selling Lion hunts in the Dec/March time frame when these cats are following the migratory pattern and give them an 8 month respite from April to November.
......Just a thought.

I curious about your thinking on that. Why? What would be the difference?

Brett:
The Northern circuit is prized for its quality of Lion and it might be in the interest of the outfitters to make every attempt in safeguarding the numbers in relieving the mounting pressure by reducing the time in which to hunt them.

Please note that reference is being made at the Northern Circuit and in particular to areas adjacent to Parks and Reserves and not the whole of Tanzania.

So Mark, will we see end of season deals in March for unsold animals?

Frank,

I wouldn't advise making a plan around that as we've actually bumped the prices for '11.
