How has the season gone so far in Gokwe with regards to elephant and buffalo?

Hi Safari2 Many thanks for your question With regards to Elephant, the Gokwe North Area has a fantastic resident population of both bulls and cows. I have done One Elephant Bull Safari in the North and whilst over 50 Bulls were seen and approached, nothing that I saw quite met the criteria of 30-35 pounds. This area is extremely rugged and if one does any form of Elephant hunting here one must be in good physical shape to be able to track some of these elephants down. With regards to tuskless hunting, as I have said above, there are good numbers of cow herds within the area of which you will have a good chance of finding a shootable tuskless that doesn’t have a dependant. In a nutshell after all the anti-poaching that has been done in the Gokwe North Area, I am now seeing that this area has become a sanctuary block for Elephant moving back and forth from the Matusadona National Park and the Chizarira National Parks and I am sure that with the volume of Elephant moving between the two parks and through the Gokwe North Area it is only a question of time before we start seeing some decent trophy sizes for Elephant Bull hunting. (See pics of bulls we saw on this safari) [IMG:left] [/IMG] [IMG:left] [/IMG] [IMG:left] [/IMG] [IMG:left] [/IMG] [IMG:left] [/IMG] [IMG:left] [/IMG] Regarding the South on Elephant hunts, timing of these hunts is important. Early when cropping season is happening is perhaps the most ideal time for this area or later in the hotter drier months when competition for food and water become greater. Expectation on Bulls 30 – 35 pounds and with regards to Tuskless hunting there are decent populations of cow herds that move in and out of the area but saying this you need to see good numbers of elephant to find a shootable tuskless, so therefore as mentioned above timing is important. Regarding Buffalo hunting, both the North and the South are different but rewarding at the same time in what they offer. The Gokwe South although buffalo herds move in and out it is primarily a Dugga Boy area with some good resident single bulls and as well as groups numbering 5 – 7 at a time so the opportunity to bag a good old dugga boy is very real. So far, we have done 2 hunts both were single dugga boys (see pic of one of the bulls taken) of a high 30’s old bull. [IMG:left] [/IMG] The area is somewhat flatter so less physically demanding on hunters. As we talk, today, we have a buffalo hunter driving into the area to begin a buffalo safari tomorrow. With regards to the Gokwe North area no buffalo hunts have been done so far this year, however, there are some fair size herds that are resident within the area numbering anywhere from 20 to 60 animals. There are some resident dugga boys and new roads have been opened in the area to make better access to the more remote springs and water. In my opinion this area is an ideal location for a solid buffalo/tuskless hunt. I hope the above information answers your question.
