Chief Changara of Muzarabani bans the Bible
By Tichaona Sibanda
13 May 2010

Chief Kasekete Changara of Muzarabani in Mashonaland Central province has sparked a religious uproar by banning the use of bibles in his area.

It is said the chief claimed the bible was a ‘tool used by the whites to colonise Africa’. The chief has also controversially ordered church leaders not to allow supporters of the MDC to worship in their churches.

Chief Changara is a well known ZANU PF sympathiser, linked to the destruction of a Pentecostal church which was razed to the ground a month ago.

A human rights watchdog, Restoration of Human Rights Zimbabwe (ROHR), told us Changara has been implicated in the escalation of politically motivated violence in Muzarabani.

ROHR spokesman Ronald Mureverwi told us their offices have been inundated with reports of the chief’s misdeeds in the district.

‘It is very much unthinkable in this day and age that we have reports of treacherous acts where an individual is convening meetings to order churches not to accept supporters of the MDC,’ Mureverwi said.

He said such actions were totally in violation of the social and religious rights of people, who had a right to worship and have religions of their choice.

‘He’s abusing his powers to push for agendas that are purely partisan, which is in contradiction with his duties as a traditional chief. It also goes to show how his madness has left Muzarabani in a state of terror,’ Mureverwi added.
‘Instead of transforming the society the chief continues to inflame the situation with his barbaric acts that have no space in Zimbabwe today’.
