One of the more successful Hunting Outfitters here in my region was the late Christo Kaizer who founded and owned Unico Hunting Safaris until his untimely passing back in 2007 when he was trampled by an elephant cow during a hunt in Botswana.

Christo was known as an excellent Professional Hunter, a staunch businessman and perfectionist in everything he did. Similar to me, he was of the belief that you could not offer a quality product in the hunting environment if you did not have access to quality hunting areas and therefore was meticulous in choosing areas to hunt. In the process, he did not only obtain hunting rights to some extraordinary properties, but also acquired several properties of his own.

After Christo's passing, shares in the properties he had an interest in were sold to one of his partners and shortly thereafter, hunting on these properties came to an end.

Last year, I obtained exclusive hunting rights to all the properties that Christo used to hunt plus a few more. The combined acreage of these properties is in excess of 40,000 acres.

One of the jewels of these properties is known as Kudu Canyon which comprises of 10 square miles of mountainous land adjacent to the Mokolo (formerly Hans Strijdom) Dam with 12 miles of river frontage. There is no fence on the Mogol River side of the property which makes this one of the few free range properties available to hunt on in Limpopo Province.







This property has not been hunted at all for the last 12 years! I was there over the weekend and it is breathtakingly beautiful.

The Waterberg Mountains have always been known for big Kudu and CT Safaris has always prided itself on the quality of Kudu we've been producing over the years. Whilst many Outfits will tell you to expect a bull of around 50" as trophy, our clients regularly bag Kudu bulls in the mid to high 50's.

Pricing for this 1X1 hunt is $450 per day which includes full board accommodations including all the regular services one would expect in a 5 star camp, my guiding services and those of Sammy - who'll be your Tracker and Skinner. I would recommend a minimum 7 day hunt but if you want to be picky on trophy size you may want to extend that to 10 days.

Trophy Fees for animals we would target on Kudu Canyon:

Kudu - $4,500 (irrespective of size)
Bushbuck - $1,300
Nyala - $2,500
Zebra - $1,400
Mountain Reedbuck - 1,000
Klipspringer - $1,500

AR Member BenKK is currently on safari with me and we spent a day on Kudu Canyon this week.

We came across this beauty of a bull below which Ben opted to shoot with his camera instead of his .300H&H:







Proof that the quality I expected to find on Kudu Canyon was not exaggerated...

It was a thrill to see and photograph this bull! I didn’t want to shoot from or near the ute, so we let him go and drove on for awhile before stopping, getting out, and walking back to pick-up his tracks. Sammy got the tracks perfectly then sneaked ahead a little to scout. Suddenly Sammy hit the deck and gestured that the bull was laying down nearby. Chris and I sneaked over but the bull wisely ghosted away, leading us in circles always keeping our wind. So, this awesome bull beat me and it was an absolute privilege to play the game with him! Kudu Canyon is an enormous series of ravines and gorges along many rugged miles of the Mogol River and Malemane River. These are completely wild, naturally breeding kudu that have always been there.

Anyway, I later had another difficult game of cat-and-mouse through the mountains with another ancient kudu and was blessed to win.

It is pretty awesome being here in South Africa with Chris and Sabina and Sammy!

What a bull Chris!

Photos can be deceiving, how much did he end up scoring? 54"? It surely is one of the best bulls I have seen in a long time!
