Hunt: Mule Deer 2022-2023 Season
Outfitter: Manuel Maldonado & Enrique Salmon
Location: Hermosillo,Sonora, Mexico

I have offered mule deer and coues deer hunts before in this forum when I was running my own outfit, I left the outfitting of hunts myself and had been hunting the last two seasons with the MX Hunting Co owned by my good friend Enrique Salmon who has been outfitting here in Sonora for 17 years.
This year some changes took place, the previous partnership Enrique had ended, so we no longer go by that name, and the American partners kept the name but we have all the ranches, leases, staff, vehicle and equipment we've had for the last couple seasons.
After these Enrique and myself have become partners and are outfitting hunts together, with me taking care of most of the operation which really excites me as it helps me to personally take care of the clients and bring my personal touch and ideas to the outfit, we are on the process of rebranding but the outfitters would be Enrique and myself, with me taking personal care of all the booking process and the whole hunt.

The area and the hunt:
Our ranches are all close to Hermosillo, all within 1 to 1.5 hours north or south, all in safe areas where no weird stuff has been happening, that is why we avoid the areas further north. I have been hunting for years in these areas and driving those roads with friends and family and have never had any incident.
We have a base camp in each area and hunters are spread out on the different neighboring and surrounding ranches that we lease each morning and rotated each day coming back to base camp to spend the night.
If you hunt on the base camp ranch, or are close enough you come back for lunch at midday, if hunting further away we spend the day on the field with our pack lunch and eat at a convenient spot, returning in the evening to base camp for dinner.

We provide feed and water for our deer in the leases, all our leases are well managed low fence cattle ranches, the ranches we have been leasing have all very good deer numbers and have all chances at good trophy size bucks, different terrain, hunting methods and hunting conditions dictate which ranch we put our hunters in.

Hunting method is mostly glassing- spot n stalk from vantage points, mixing some high racking, or sitting over active feeding spots. All depending on the ranch, terrain and the deer activity that has been observed. We have good quality rifles with good optics in case you don't wish to bring your own firearm, but based on familiarity, especially on long shots, bringing your own is recommended.

Trophy expectation:
We are usually looking for mature deer over the 185” mark, we adjust our trophy standards depending on what has been seen, 190” are taken every week but we consider a deer that size a first day shooter on most instances, all our ranches have the potential of producing 200” plus bucks, with several seen and taken each year.
Our biggest buck last season was 226” broken, and we took around 8 more over the 200” mark. One season before our biggest was 223” and we took 3 other bucks over 215”.
On the links I provided you can check out the trophies taken on both seasons to have an idea of what to expect.

On the coues deer we target bucks over the 100¨mark to consider them shooters, we always shoot bigger deer, we took 3 over 120¨last season including one just at 130¨

On some of our mule deer ranches we have coues deer population but in most cases if a coues deer is added we will move to our coues deer specialty ranches, also around 1-1.5 hour from hermosillo max.

Lodging, meals & drinks and services:
You stay on nice comfortable ranch houses that have been adequate to accommodate our hunters, clean beds, with clean sheets, daily room service, hot and cold running water, and electricity are available in all camps.
Meals are home cooked prepared by our very experienced cooks, traditional mexican cuisine is the norm, you also have the service of our cooks and waiters at any time for whatever you request.

The price is in the high end of Sonoran hunts, but we feed and water our ranches, work on the roads and do scouting throughout the year, we provide good food, good accommodations and great chances at a fantastic trophy, on good ranches with great deer numbers.

I've hunted with Manuel three times now, and took the 200 3/8" buck pictured in January.

These guys are as good as it gets in Mexico!
