Mario.I could be wrong but i dont think anybody can garentee a pure red lechwe in south africa. There has been alot of inter breeding with Kafue lechwe to the point were no one really knows what they are.On the reserch ive done a Red lechwe should not have so much black on its shoulder. But maybe there is a bots ph or zambian ph that can tell you exactly what to look for

Jimmara,
I think you have reason. My question was really aimed to know if the population was indigenous or introduced

Hi Mario,

Yes as far as i know all lechwe in SA are introduced, they have been on this and neighbouring concessions for about 30 years. By free range i mean not fenced in by means of a 8 foot fence, but rather come and go as they please to look for the greener grass on the other side. As for the mix of Red and Kafue, i'm no scientist, so good thing i'm in Africa otherwise some wisecrack will have me up for false advertising Smiler. Seriously, it is interesting though, perhaps i'll get the next Lechwe a client shoots DNA tested. Keep you posted.

Cheers

Murray

Never mind, I deleted my post. IF AN OUTFITTER DOES NOT KNOW LECHWE NEVER HAS AND NEVER WILL BE NATIVE TO SOUTH AFRICA IT DOES NOT WARRANT ANY RESPONSE.

I did a cull hunt with Murray and had a great time!! I learned 3 things while I was
there,

1. I need to practice shooting!! particularly on running game!!

2. I can't walk as fast as sheldon (murrays ph)

3. Do not play pool with Murray for tequila shots!!!

Murray, I hope all is well at home and I hope to hunt with you again someday!

Hi Charl,

Dont Get your post! No one said lechwe are native to SA, did they? The Question is whether they are pure red lechwe or a mix with the Kafue?

My youngest son and I hunted Red Lechwe in the Baviaansriver Conservancy this past June. Likely the same place Murray is hunting, or close to it.

The Lechwe are obviously not indigenous, but they were introduced decades ago and ARE most definitely free-range and hunted fair chase.

As to their genetics, can't say for sure. However, my PH was of the opinion that they are indeed a mix of red and Kafue Lechwe.

You NEVER know what will be found in RSA these days. I hunted last year near Steenbokpan with African Barefoot Safaris, and we saw Cape Buffalo on a concession next door to where we hunted Kudu.

nice trophy, by the way...
