I just got home after doing this hunt and am trying to get back on Utah time. Dennis, thank for posting the photo.

I have wanted to do a chamois hunt since I was stationed in Italy in the Army in the late 70s. I saw chamois in the Bad Tolz area in Germany while I was taking my rifle platoon through a Special Forces course and since then have always wanted to hunt them. I was a little concerned about doing this hunt because I am 71. After discussing it with Dennis, I decided to try it. I got into Skopjy, Macedonia, the middle of the afternoon. The driver met me after I came out of customs and took me into the police office. They already had my rifle permit prepared so everything took less than 5 minutes. We headed straight for the hunting area. Got there in time to fire a shot to check my rifle and then had a good meal and went to bed. Food in the camp was excellent.

The next morning we got up early, had a good breakfast, and then headed out in the dark. We got up as high as we could drive just after daylight and started walking. It was a good climb for an hour or maybe a little more. Once we were near the top it flattened out to rolling hills and was easier walking. We could see a few chamois before we left the truck and had seen at least 50 by the time I shot mine. He was one of two males in a group of about 30 chamois. They were on a steep slope below the rim. Distance was 198 yards (182 meters). He ran 15-20 yards and was done. The bullet hit him just behind the shoulder and was about centered vertically. Based on growth rings on the horns, he was 9-10 years old. The CIC score was 95. I hunt for mature, representative animals and don't pay much attention to scores. I am totally satisfied with him. We were done hunting by 9:30 the first morning.

The rifle I used was a Sako M85 Bavarian in .270 WSM that I bought on AR from Biebs. I used a 140 gr. Nosler partition loaded with RL-22.

After the hunt I was able to hire the driver to take me on a 2-day trip to visit Lake Ohrid, the largest freshwater lake in Europe. I also spent about 1.5 days looking around Skopjy. I stayed in a nice 4-star hotel on the river in the center of Skopjy that was on 50 euros per night. They also had a good restaurant.

Everything was well organized, food and hotels were nice, and everyone was friendly. I would recommend this hunt to anyone wanting to try European hunting.

As you may know we have and shoot a lot of chamois here in NZ. I'm not familiar with the CIC scoring system, we use a scoring system devised for NZ and used in Australasia.
Although our scoring system does recognise the horn girth (and spread for feral goat), generally speaking it is the length of horn that is used to judge a 'trophy' chamois or Himalayan Tahr amongst hunters. When glassing or spotting these animals to determine if they are are a trophy to shoot, it is the horn length that is the more easily measurable e.g. chamois how high above the head the horn curve sits, for tahr, how far back the horn curves behind the ear.

Interested to know what sort of horn length are some of the chamois heads in the photos (length being over the outside of the curve tip to base)?
