sinner? lol and i'm not?! i just don't have drinks or smoke in the field, worked in camps that did and thats not what i'm out there for...i take guys out to hunt. drinking can wait when theres guns and bears around and my life...smokes make all my equitment smell bad and i have to get new stuff so the non smokes don't get headaches...thats all.
Would the big bears be normally hunted in the berry patches that time of year ??? Interesting comments about the drinking .. I was out on a jet boat in Alaska once and the guide broke the controls when he got some crud in the jet system (not sure if I am explaing this properly) .. He instantly got very very upset and we got back to the very close bank safely .. I wasn't in the least concerned as we were not out in the raging main river and with satellite phone and lots of food I was missing something but was not sure what ??? (It pays to be ignorant at times, I reckon) .. later that night he asked if I had any booze with me ?? I didn't and he was a bit sceptical .. but I didn't and I actually wished that I had brought a mickey of Scotch as this fine man seemed to really need a drink ... I hope to hunt with him again some day but I think that I will plan better ...

i explained the smoking part... drinking...worked camps where guys drank and had several clients in the morning not fully funcational, one guy shot a hole in the lodge floor, one couldn't walk and just flat out told me he was a little buzzed. bottom line is you dont' know me and i don't know you, tossin' some booze in with guns and strangers...well its just a safer bet without it.
Caracal -- it's real simple! He doesn't trust people he doesn't know to handle a rifle and drink at the same time -- he's had some prior bad experiences and doesn't want to repeat them.
with respect to smoking --- many people doesn't like to sleep in a bed or live in a room that smells like smoke and that means if he allows some people to smoke he can't book those that don't like to smoke. Just like a hotel with smoking and non-smoking rooms --- he's a non-smoking, no drinking while hunting guide.
He's up front about it and that's good.
Personally I don't drink and won't ride in a car with a driver that does. I also won't get into a boat with someone who drinks while operating the controls --- and I won't be around anyone with a firearm that's had a drink.

Two hunts in Alaska ago (all just with our friends/family there) my dad was still on the sauce and his old buddies were drinking and smoking and those two were also smoking dope...
Didn't hardly get any hunting done.

The only rule we have in our hunting camps is no alcohol; doesn't matter where we are. Hunting and alcohol doesn't mix well if you are serious about hunting. I fully understand the smoking issue also. Just happens that none of our regular bunch smoke so we don't have any issues about smoking. Rules are rules and if you don't like em don't go-every one will be happier in the long run.

These Alaskan hunts are NOT easy as many can attest to that have been there. I always get in the best shape I can if I am going to spend my hard earned dollars on such an adventure and they are still challenging and more all the time as I am 53 now. On my daily workouts I can tell noticebly if I have had a few drinks the evening prior. I have never smoked so I cannot relate to that but it seems it would not help when you are climbing hills all day. Unfortunately I have never had a B&C animal jump out in front of me 50 yards from camp on the first day of my hunt. I have always had to work hard for them so I do not mind leaving the drinks at home for this type of hunt. Looking for that easy shot on the first day and then easing back for a little fishing or enjoying the country (dreaming)!

This is a great deal. Anyone that would turn down this hunt for the sole reason they can't smoke or drink might have more serious underlying issues and may need to seek help. If I had the time I'd go.

i do have some serious issues. i don't like to be told what i can and can't do on my vacation where my hard earned money is being spent, as long as safety is not the issue. i never smoke indoors or in any enclosed space and i never drink until i get in at night and the guns have been put away. so thanks for your concern but i think i will pass on seeking help.

SAEED The list of threads on this forum should be a perfect reason why there should be a need for a new FORUM PAGE: BITCH!!! ABOUT THE OUTFITTERS-OFFERED AND DISCOUNTED HUNTS. CALL IT: "WHY I WOULD NEVER HUNT WITH THIS OUTFIT" Jake Jefferson YOU should be applauded for keeping a very clean operation keeping any potential actions that may spoil a great hunt. Keep up the no drinking and smoking policy in camp.

I believe it is a good thing that the guide lays his cards on the table from the on set. It would appear Jake is serious about getting his clients their game. I like a drink after a long day as well especially in the bird fields however these type hunts Jake is offering are not for the faint of heart! I have been on enough of these jaunts to know that I will need to muster all the energy I can to be successful and a little luck always helps. This was a good offering for those serious about getting a good bear however I do not think it would be a walk in the park. Perhaps Jake is hinting this in his message.

This has been interesting reading! Seems some folks just cannot handle 10 days w/o drinking; or, they cannot figure out how to enjoy a victory without some help. I drink, occasionally; and smoke a pipe constantly, however, I would not let the proscription against doing either of them influence my decision.

thanks for everyones input. just a heads up to those who disagree with my policy..
there are outfitters in alaska who'll let you drink and smoke and are thrilled to take your money, your more than welcome to book with them if thats the trip your looking for.
i'm am what i am and i do what i do the way i do it. no one said you have to pick a hunt with me....
I don't smoke but don't care if you do. I do have a beer or another suitable libation every evening with my campfire and sunset while hunting unless I'm out too late.
I am also one of those who doesn't care to spend a vacation with a hall monitor.
Cheers,
Adrian

THIS ISN"T A POLL on what everyone does, it was a thread to sell a discounted bear hunt. hunt is sold, for the rest who need to drink on a hunt there are plenty of outfitters who don't have a cancellation bear hunt listed in THIS thread...
well the hunt got filled by a non smoker and drinker...but he put it off for a week of hunting in alaska! he shot a nice grizz on day 5 i believe, saw one other nice one, a dozen black bears but he didn't bring a tag. great hunt with a great client. .30-'06 at 48 yards digging ground squirrels.
Here's the bear I got with Jake last week. Jake was very disappointed that we got it on the fourth day so we didn't get to camp out on the ground in the snow.
Rather than using horses or mules, we used ATVs. I never would have believed they would go where we went if I hadn't done it myself. There was a warning placard on mine that said one shouldn't go up a more than 25 degree grade. Jake assured me we never exceeded 24 degrees.
I think I would be in a lot better shape if I lived in Alaska.
