Two questions: 1. What's the difference between one car and the other? 2. At $500 per day ?
|
One of Us |
Hi Fujotupu, It's the same car..., used only for leopard hunts and dedicated to go to the mountain to make the baits. If the hunter wants us to bait before his arrival it's a "pre-baiting car", if he wants to have a car dedicated to baiting during the safari to increase chances to get a leopard while he is hunting other species, it's a "baiting car". We charge that amount because nice leopards are often very high in the mountain and deep forest, so it takes one full day to go up and make and check the baits and one other PH knowing perfectly the place must be in that car. Anyway, if the hunter doesn't want any baiting car and is ok to make the baits by imself with his PH during the hunt, it's also fine for us.

I would say that is the most beautiful place I have ever seen in Africa. What area is that in?

What animals can a guy hunt on a regular 10 day license in that area?
|
One of Us |
Masailand is a most beautiful place and you should definitely go, and hunt, there. Masailand on a 10 day license? I'll defer to the Tanzanian PH's here, but I think that's going to be pretty much restricted to 2 buffalo, a kongoni, a wildebeest, Grant's, Thompson's, Zebra, impala and warthog. May be some exceptions depending on the locale. Now the deal being proposed is hunting 10 days on a 21 day license. That opens the doors. Let's do the math here (not counting cost of the license, VAT, charters, transfers, firearms permits, etc.): 10 days for $50,000. Trophy fees for animals claimed to be 95% chance of success. $19,925. Trophy fees are obviously plus or minus, but you might get one of those 30% animals that I didn't even add in. Like I say, I love Tanzania.

Forgot the trophy fee for buffalo and leopard and the success fees. Sorry. I guess I'm not that good at math.

Hi, Yes the place is really amazing and the landscapes are stunning. The campside as a remarkable view on the Great Rift Valley. The area is located in Masailand, just near Lake Natron, in the middle of the vulcanoes mosaic of this region, between Mount Kilimandjaro and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Feel free to ask if you need more photos of the landscapes. Regarding the 10 day licence, we can make offers for a 7-day hunt with 10-day licence which includes 1 specimen of the following species: 1 Buffalo, 1 Baboon, 1 Bushpig, 1 Grant, 1 Thomson, 1 EA Impala, 1 Warthog, 1 White-Bearded Wildebeest, 1 Cokes Hartebeest and 1 Common Zebra. For this 7-day hunt, Buffalo is hunted under Success Fee, as described in my first post. Some people here may wonder why the buffalo is under success fee: it's because this area is mainly dedicated to hunt masai species. We find buffalos only in the deep forest which cover the crateria at the top of our high mountain. The hunt there is very adventurous and not always predicatble, it's a real expedition which need at least one or two days, whith fly camp accommodation and no car (it stays down). But to me it's one of the best hunting experience a true hunter can do in his life... If people are interested in special buffalo hunts, we can manage that in our other concessions in Selous and Rungwa, as well as in our new areas in Uganda. Feel free to ask if you need some information about these hunts.

Looks like a great area. I know buffalo are challenging there, but I couldn't possibly go to Masailand, especially near the crater, and not spend some serious time on buffalo.

How can you apply a "success fee" when the advertised TF is almost half for both Buffalo ($2,700) and Leopard ($8,500) ? If the client doesn't shoot either of these two, or any other animal on license for that matter, it wouldn't cost him or the outfitter anything. One could understand hiking the govt. fee 10-15% by reason of anti-poaching or community development, but to double the price? No wonder TZ is getting overpriced, what with inflated TF fees, cost of "baiting" cars and of course the charter fees (not applicable in this instance).

So, is this a $50,000 10-day plains game hunt? Does the posting date of April 1 play into this? Without critizising it but I really wonder what makes one to book such hunts for such prices. But supply and demand will supply the answer.

Hi, Unfortunatly, the posting on April 1 is just a coincidence... Of course TZ hunting rates are quite high, but ourselves can't do anything about that and be sure that if we could offer hunts like that at lower rates, we would be the first to be happy. As you know, all the masai species (Lesser Kudu, gerenuk, Fringe-Earded Oryx, etc.) can't be considered as classic "plains game". There are very valuable and sought after trophies that can be hunted only in Northern TZ and that's why safari rates for these species are higher than any classical plain game safari. Also, all that species can legally be hunted only with a 21-day license... Those rates are those of the market and I'm not sure it's possible to find very different offers from other outfitters. And finally, we are lucky to offer all the masai species within the same area, with very good success rates during the last seasons. Regarding the success fee for Buffalo and Leopard; as I said in my previous message buffalo are very challenging there and need to dedicate a couple of days to hunt in the crater, so it seems normal to me to pay an extra cost if the hunter is hunting both masai species in the plain and buffalos in the crater. In my opinion, the success fees system is quite fair because you pay only if the animal is shot. We had quite good results on buffalo last season but anyway this hunt remains hard and unpredicatble. If people are interested in special buffalo safaris, we are managing that in our area in the Selous, for lower rates Regarding the Leopard, it's the same story, it's normal that a leopard safari is more expensive than a classic safari for masai species and plains game so the success fees system is one more time quite fair, it has to be paid only if the leopard is shot. I clarify that of course the 7-day hunt (10 day license) offered in my latest post is at much lower price. Feel free to contact me if interested.

That's how it is anyway, kill or wound an animal whether its in Masailand, in a crater or on the top of a mountain, in the Selous, or Western Tanzania, the Govt. TF is paid. Charging double for an eventual success on 2 particular species just because the hunt may be challenging is simply ludicrous - we hunt because of the challenge, otherwise we go to a Game Farm down south.

I'm ok with you but it's not a matter of trophy fees. Let's make it simple: everywhere in Africa the price of a leopard safari will be more expensive than the price of a plains game safari, right ? Here we are offering a plains game safari (masai species + other antelopes) at the indicated price. You book for a plains game safari, but if you want to shoot a leopard you can do it with extra charge (success fees). Sorry but I don't see what is wrong. You can go everywhere in Africa, if you book a plains game safari, you will not shoot a lion or a leopard for the same price.

Yes a lot to do over ten days. But with hard work and a baiting car, we can make it because it's a very good area. Last july we shot Leopard, Buffalo, all masai species and plains game in a 6 day hunt, so over 10 days it must be possible...
