Act NOW for these Left-Over Navajo Hunting Permits

(posted June 05, 2015)

In the November, 2014 issue we highlighted some of the hunts available to non-members on the Navajo Reservation. See Article 3421 for full background. The deadline for draw hunts was May 29, and the Tribe has posted the available leftover permits on its web site.

It should be noted that the hunts categorized as "trophy hunts" all were taken in the draw. However, permits remain for archery, muzzleloader and rifle deer and elk hunts, as well as one youth elk hunt and two cow elk hunts. Guides are not required for these hunts, but some of the hunts take place in areas where deer or elk populations are thin and widely scattered.

The cow elk hunt permits have late-season dates and are only $300, making it a practical way to hunt while looking over some of the very remote country the big deer live in. A trophy hunter interested in possibly hunting one of the Navajo trophy hunts in the future could use one of these permits to pre-scout the terrain.

Leftover licenses are available first-come, first-served, so act quickly if you are interested. You can see the list of leftover permits at http://www.nndfw.org/leftover.htm, (you can identify which hunt is which and when by cross-referencing with the list of hunts at http://www.nndfw.org/2015_16nn_proclamation.pdf), or call Vernonda at the Navajo Nation Department of Fish and Wildlife at 928-871-6450. - Mike Bodenchuk, Editor-at-Large.

On these low dollar opportunities I would not worry too much, but I know a guy who bought an expensive bison permit here and showed up only find the permit had been invalidated. Incredibly, the tribe had screwed over a guy high up in B&C admin who could have really publicized their opportunities and made them bank. Such is the shortsightedness found in the world today I suppose. Anyway, this story I know first hand and have heard rumors of other problems with Navajo hunts. Caveat emptor!
