There was some talk this last week here on AR about Mozambique elephant and the great expense of hunting them. That is just not true for all operators. You can hunt elephant in Niassa at ver reasonavble rates considering the quality of the elephants coming from this area.

Toni Wicker/Freischuetz here on AR has been operating in Mozambique since '95 and in Niassa since '08. He has Coutada 14 on the Delta and the Nungo plus Messalo concessions in Niassa that comprise 1.5 million acres. These concessions are not part of the reserve but are in the Marupa district of the Niassa province. The area is sparsely populated (500 on the concessions)and essentially are very wild.

The best hunting for elephant in these Niassa concessions will be Oct/Nov as mango and marula fruits ripen. Expectation if you can walk on the tracks should be 65#-85# with the largest bull so far weighing in at 98#.

These areas are reached most efficiently via a direct flight from JNB or Maputo to Pemba and then a charter to Marupa and a 40 km ride to camp.

As most know these elephant are not importable at this time for US citizens but many other countries can import ivory from Mozambique or as Larry Shores asked about replicas can be easily made.

PRICING:

15 OR 21 days $1200 per day
Elephant license $10500
Hunting license $300
Gun permit $275 first rifle $100 second gun
Trophy tranfer to Chomoio and documentation $1000
Dip/pack dependent on what you shoot.

TROPHY FEES:

Ele up to 70# $12500
70#-80# $500 per pound
80# plus $1000 per pound

That figures out to $42575 plus dip/pack and flights for a 70 pounder. The very best areas in Zim are that expensive and Botswana can be far more expensive.

Additionaltrophy fees plus lic

Sable $3000 $1500
Reedbuck $900 $450
Bushpig $400 $250
Warthog $400 $250
Haertebeest $2000 $850
Duiker $250 $250
Kudu $1200 $1200
Hyena $800 $400

Just wondering what the trophy fees on the bulls posted would be?

Would the trophy fee on a 80 lb bull be 40000 and 81000 on a 81lb bull?

Thanks Louis

Louis,

70#-80# is an additional $500 per pound over the $12500 basic trophy fee and 80# plus is $1000 per pound over the base trophy fee plus the 70#-80# trophy fee.

Fabulous elephants and I know its fairly common practice in many countries and not you Mark but I hate the thought of being penalised if its my good fortune, luck, skill to shoot a bigger trophy!

Arjun,

I understand what your saying about the sliding scale but it seems to be the norm in a lot of places particularly where you find big ivory.

Toni's prices are on the sliding scale but only take a jump per pound not a flat fee of $5000-$50,000 if you go over a certain threshold of weight. So when your bull weighs in at 81 pounds you only pay an additional $1000 on the trophy fee not $5000-$10000 which in my experience is what you usually find.

Mark - Just curious and wondering if you get many Americans going on these Elephant hunts? They sure are great bulls and probably worth the price but, unfortunately, way out of my price range. When all is said and done this hunt will run close to $50K and I can't imagine anyone spending that kind of coin and not being able to bring the ivory back to the US.

Tom,

No question that this hunt is more for the European market but hunting to many is more for the hunt than the trophy in my estimation. I'm sure some could be more than happy with reproductions. I think I could be.

If you shoot an 85# you still shot an 85# regardless of whether you have the real ivory or not in your home.

These are surely superb bulls and I have no doubt that these are well organized hunts by professional people from an agency as well as from a PH perspective. The daily rates and even the increasing trophy fees are all-in quite reasonable, it is the licence fee of US 10.5 k which makes the offer a lot less attractive. I wish those hunts all the best but given Europes economical weakness and the current strength of the dollar it might be challenging.

So if the ivory is not importable to the USA, what do you do with it? Sell it and recover some of the cost of the hunt?

At present the only thing a US citizen can do is to have some reproductions made and hope that in the future that Mozambique will provide US,F&W with what they need to allow the import of ivory. It can happen as the first imports of ivory from Zambia for many years have just been allowed into the US.
