Welcome to AR Natasha! I sure wish I could come again this year!!!!!! Heck I wish I could have just stayed! My Buff from 2011, 43 1/2" Dagga boy My Buff from March 2013, 43" Dagga boy These folks will really take care of you and make certain that you have a great time! These are some of the best Buffalo you will find! Period! And Johan is a great PH and a great man to hunt with. I have always gotten much more than I paid for. It does sound a bit pricey but you might end up on three or four "bargain" hunts before you find animals like these. No charter involved, and a truly wild place with all the big five! I saw much more game here including Elephant and Rhino here than I did in Chirisa in Zim! .

Great outfit and one of the few places to hunt in South Africa without a high fence. I have been with Johan 3x and have killed a 70 lb ele, hippo, 44" and 46" buff and a lion.

Johan is a great guy and PH. I know him and have a lot of respect for him, so do not take this as a knocking.....but the areas are fenced. Huge yes....but to say it is unfenced is simply not true. Here we go !!! To tell a client before booking a hunt the area is unfenced and you hunt actualy behind the high fence is IMO Fraud. Regardless how big the area is ! Nec Timor Nec Temeritas

Does this area have open access to Kruger with only a river separating it?

If my infos are correct we are talking about an area of 200,000 acres. western boundary is fenced. It's open to the Kurger, so you would have to walk to the boarder of Mosambique or Zim to find the fence.
The outfitter never said it's unfenced

Infinio: Good catch. I guess what I should have really said is that the area has a fence on one side and is open on the others to approximately 7,500 sq miles of park. So technically this area would be less fenced than the Bubaye or Save. Thanks for pointing this out. When were you there to determine the fence location? Mbogo: Sorry to see you throw such a harsh accusation at one of the most honest outfitters I know.

I am Johan's "neighbour" at Mtimkulu/Letaba ranch. Both Mtimkulu and Letaba Ranch ( where controlled hunting also takes place )is fenced on the outside perimeter ( for obvious reasons, to contain both reserves animals as well as Krugers animals ), and both Mtimkulu and Letaba ranch are open with each other and BOTH are open with the Kruger National Park ( 2 million hectares ) The Letaba river flows through Mtimkulu reserve and Letaba Ranch and actually divides the two reserves and then flows through the Kruger park, then into Massingir dam in Moz and then joins the Limpopo river and empties into the sea at Xai Xai in Moz. I hope this clears up the "fencing" issue. The area is only fenced on the perimeter, no other fences in sight
|

That's exactly correct!!! To say this place is "fenced" or a "high-fence" ranch is totally in-correct!! Game can/does freely go back/forth into the KNP at will. Or the neighboring Letaba, as this poster indicates. Been there, seen it all with my own two eyes.

IT is probably the best area in South Africa, I cannot agree more. Johan and his team is a great outfit, and I said it from the start. The place is HUGE and open to the Kruger. I mentioned this only as I wanted to confirm a point I have been trying make on AR many times when these bloody fences comes up. There are places in South Africa where the Dangerous Game are Free Roaming, self sustainable and WILD. This is one of those places. You will also pay a premium to hunt here, as it is simply a fantastic area. But to say it is unfenced is not true. Although it is many many acres, it does have an outside, Kruger boundary fence. Maybe a technical point, but it is what it is. So many folks here have, as uninformed hunters, pointed out that the Kruger Conservancies are fenced hunts, painting a picture that is simply NOT true. This was NOT in any shape way or form an attempt to discredit the outfit, advertisement or area. I believe this thread in total will serve, rightly so, as an incentive for folks to book with Johan, which you should! My apologies if it came out wrong! Kruger.... fenced? I don't really want to be pedantic about the definition of "fenced", but the last time I was there (granted, a decade ago) the "fence" along the limpopo in Makuleke consisted of a single strand of cable run between sunken railroad ties. From what I have heard of Zim hunts taking place across that border it would seem the situation has not changed and game moves freely. If a "greater Kruger" hunt is fenced on three sides but open to the park and Kruger is open on three sides, is the hunt "fenced"? Silly to say so I think.

How many hectares is the hunting area? Last I heard it was only around 10 000 hectares? As for best area in South Africa for Buffalo and Elephant, I would have to disagree with this statement, the APNR which is around 250 000 hectares has a larger population of both Buffalo and Elephant and I would not place any one better than the next, being open with Kruger gives each one its unique character and hunters who hunt there an opportunity to hunt great animals,

Dave don’t come with your aggression, read my post, not pissing on any ones name, I have sent hunters there and they hunt with me as well, we help each other out when needed, all I stated was that all open reserves have the same appeal, so do me a favour and take that 11th post and you know where to stick it Boet.

jk must have not paid attention when he read "How to Make Friends and Inluence People". I am kind of disapointed by the attitudes and conduct of a couple of South Africans on this post, damn shame. THis is an advertisement for an honest hunt by honest people and a couple of guys have to come on here and nitpick! What a shame. Jealousy is terrible, much more terrible when broadcast over the WWW. .

If you walk far enough in Zimbabwe you'll come to a fence. If the hunter is on foot and the animal(s) can escape it's a fair hunt. I've seen many clients and PHs in Zim and Tanzania, in country as open as when God made it, drive around and shoot game from their vehicle. To me this is more of a sin than a fenced property hunted on foot. I am not making excuses for people bad mouthing each other, but it is an indication of attitudes in South Africa now. A lot of landowners are facing uncertain futures and the way things are going, folk tend to get a little ratty. BTW, what ever happened to the unwritten gentlemen's agreement "that no PHs or OUTFITTERS pointed fingers at each other?"

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have been hunting for over 30 years. I have hunted Zimbabwe, Tanzania and South Africa. Tanzania and Zimbabwe were open range hunting, while South Africa was on fenced farms. I enjoyed all the hunts. We chased an eland all day inside a fenced up area, and never managed to get a shot at him. In both Zimbabwe and Tanzania, we chased buffalo and other animals all day and never managed to see them. On other occasions, we have been driving in our truck when we came across a buffalo or other animals. All we needed do was jump out of the truck and shoot them. Do we judge a hunt on how difficult it is?
|

"Do we judge a hunt on how difficult it is" Absolutely not! I've been on hard hunts and easy hunts. I've hunted DIY and fenced in RSA. They were all great experiences. I have a hard time understanding why someone cares where and how someone hunts. The more hunters in the field, the better off we are.
