A friend and I hunted plains game with Jan last July and had a great hunt. We saw good leopard tracks about every day, and some of Jan's hunters took leopards last year (do a search in the Hunt Reports). One day we found a beef calf that had just been killed by a leopard. I want to go back and hunt a leopard but will have to wait a couple of years. Anyone going on this hunt should have a good time. Jan also has excellent quality gemsbok, Hartmann's mountain zebra, and kudu. Jan's wife is a great cook also.

What does this mean in practical terms?

**Higher prices for bigger trophies will only be applicable if client demand certain trophy sizes.

What is your success rate on Leopard in this area and average size/score?

Thanks.

I have been remiss in not posting a hunt report from last August with Jan. My daughter and I spent two weeks there and it was wonderful. We saw lots of leopard sign, and took a beautiful cat on the third day of hunting, which was the first day in the blind. Jan is very knowledgeable, and fun to spend time with. He is also a man of his word.
My daughter turned 15 in Namibia, and I was worried if she would have fun on safari. She did not want to come home when it was over. Jan and Mariesje are fantastic hosts, and Mariesje is a wonderful cook.

It seems my previous posting disappeared, so I will try and write it the same again. Pardon me if it appears twice.

Some clients insist on shooting, for instance a 40" or bigger gemsbok bull, resulting in passing up a lot of good quality old bulls. ( In my opinion a lot of the 40" bulls are still too young to be shot as trophies.)

This is not the problem, since everyone knows what he/she wants, and after all is the one that pays the bill in the end.

The problem is that such trophies are not found behind every bush, resulting in me, the PH now having to spend many more days of hard work and a lot of extra fuel driving around to find such a trophy for the same income.

Thus, I have decided to price kudu and gemsbok according to a sliding scale. This sliding scale prices are only applicable to those that have specific high trophy size requirements.

If a client is not adamant about certain trophy sizes, and fortunate enough to bag for instance a 42" gemsbok bull, the standard ( lower ) price will be applicable.

I hope this clarifies it.

I believe Jan went 2/3 in 2013 on leopards. AR members "M Massey 338" and "AR 79" both were successful while "Another Arizona Writer" was unsuccessful. I hunted with Jan in May 2013 and August 2012 and had fabulous hunts. Here are my reports from those hunts:

Bud, you are correct about him going 2/3 last year.
As to size, my cat was 130# and 7' long, and I think fairly typical for the area.
I believe time of year and moon phase are important as well, but ask Jan. He will give you straight answers about your chances and expectations.
